Jesus was a Jew. Why are some of us "Catholics"? What is a "Catholic"? How has abuse been allowed to exist within the Catholic Church ever since its inception? Why is any abuse within the Church accepted, tolerated, or even possible? When clergy harm any member of our church family, the entire Church is harmed. When do we become ashamed of "indifference" within our Church and stop being merely "bystanders" to abuses by clergy? No matter the form or the magnitude, abuse is abuse. Through their clerical abuses, clericalism, and lack of authenticity, clergy destroy their credibility as "priests." It is then that members of the laity are compelled to walk away from the Church they deeply love. To continue as a true "Christian" in the religion of one's choice, where does one go? What does one do? As true "Catholics," we are called to deepen our love for God by not being afraid to ask questions or to question our faith. Who do we say God is? What do we believe in? Rick shares personal experiences and witness with brief history points and insight of our Catholic Church, praying to encourage and challenge others to embrace "parresia," an awesome term used by Bergoglio with the conclave prior to being elected as Pope Francis. We are all this beautiful and blessed "assembly" which is our "Church," where everyone should feel welcome and loved; and no one should ever be abused, feel intimidated, ignored, excluded, or afraid. Shalom!

Decisively shaped by the turbulent atmosphere of war, occupation and resistance, the years 1943-1955 gave rise to a most unusual flowering of progressive initiatives in Catholic politics, theology and apostolic missions. Though suffering severe setbacks in the deep freeze of the Cold War politics, mid-Century European Left Catholicism was not without influence in the subsequent emergence of Latin American Liberation Theology and the deliberations of the Vatican II. This volume constitutes the first attempt to analyse the phenomenon of Western European Left Catholicism from a comparative and transnational perspective.

The main features of liberal American Catholicism--feminist theology and practice, contested issues of sexual conduct, new social locations of academic theology, liturgy, spirituality, ministry, race and ethnicity, and public Catholicism--are presented here in their historical and social contexts.

For Contents and Introduction click . In this volume five cardinals of the Church, and four other scholars, respond to the call issued by Walter Cardinal Kasper for the Church to harmonize "fidelity and mercy in its pastoral practice with civilly remarried, divorced people". The contributors are Walter Cardinal Brandmüller; Raymond Cardinal Burke; Carlo Cardinal Caffarra; Velasio Cardinal De Paolis, C.S.; Robert Dodaro, O.S.A.; Paul Mankowski, S.J.; Gerhard Cardinal Müller; John M. Rist; and Archbishop Cyril Vasil', S.J. Cardinal Kasper appeals to early Church practice in order to support his view. The contributors bring their wealth of knowledge and expertise to bear upon this question, concluding that the Bible and the Church Fathers do not support the kind of "toleration" of civil marriages following divorce advocated by Cardinal Kasper. They also examine the Eastern Orthodox practice of oikonomia (understood as "mercy" implying "toleration") in cases of remarriage after divorce and in the context of the vexed question of Eucharistic Communion. The book traces the long history of Catholic resistance to this practice, revealing the serious theological and pastoral difficulties it poses in past and current Orthodox Church practice. As the authors demonstrate, traditional Catholic doctrine, based on the teaching of Jesus himself, and current pastoral practice are not at odds with genuine mercy and compassion. The authentic "gospel of mercy" is available through a closer examination of the Church's teachings. "Because it is the task of the apostolic ministry to ensure that the Church remains in the truth of Christ and to lead her ever more deeply into that truth, pastors must promote the sense of faith in all the faithful, examine and authoritatively judge the genuineness of its expressions and educate the faithful in an ever more mature evangelical discernment." - St. John Paul II, Familiaris Consortio
