Elephants used to be a great rarity in Europe: there were only a few elephants in the continent in the entire seventeenth century. Hansken, a female elephant who was born on the island of Sri Lanka and arrived in Amsterdam in the summer of 1633, is the most famous ? and not just because Rembrandt drew her. Cornelis van Groenevelt, Hansken?s owner, earned a handsome living by teaching her tricks and touring the continent with her. Wherever she went, Hansken evoked amazement and admiration. People examined her, measured her and wrote down what they had seen.0Michiel Roscam Abbing tells Hansken?s story based on a meticulous analysis of the sources. He has reconstructed the route Hansken took. The traces left by Hansken in European cultural history also form a potent picture of the age. After Hansken?s death in 1655, her skeleton became the object of study, enabling myths about giants to be refuted. She was even used for the first scientific description of her species, Elephas maximus.0As a follow-up to 'Rembrandt?s Elephant, The Story of Hansken' (2006, ISBN 9789080874565), which was also published by Leporello.00Translation of ' Rembrandts olifant. In het spoor van Hansken', ISBN 9789079624195, Amsterdam: Leporello (2016). Translation by Clare Wilkinson.

This volume explores the late medieval and early modern periods from the perspective of objects. While the agency of things has been studied in anthropology and archaeology, it is an innovative approach for art historical investigations. Each contributor takes as a point of departure active things: objects that were collected, exchanged, held in hand, carried on a body, assembled, cared for or pawned. Through a series of case studies set in various geographic locations, this volume examines a rich variety of systems throughout Europe and beyond. At the occasion of his death the Leiden humanist Petrus Scriverius (1576-1660) was characterized as someone who published his own writings or those of others. Financially independent, this antiquarian and philologist published countless books during his long and productive live, among them annotated classical texts and historical treatises. Scriverius indeed published many works by other authors, especially poetry. We encounter him in learned circles as composer of laudatory poems, correspondent or as contributor to alba amicorum. Scriverius is omnipresent in Dutch seventeenth century culture, but relatively unknown.0This volume presents a comprehensive documentation on Scriverius: his life, his works, his contacts, etc. It is the result of many years of study conducted, guided and stimulated by Dr. Pierre Tuynman (1929-2016) of the former Institute of Neophililogy and Neo-Latin of the University of Amsterdam.

* 2019 marks 350 years since Rembrandt's death. This book accompanies the exhibition at The Rembrandt House Museum in Amsterdam, exploring Rembrandt's network of friends and familyRembrandt seems to have been an artist who took little notice of other people. Yet he had a family, friends and acquaintances who helped him, bought his art, lent him money, challenged him artistically and inspired him. He would never have become such a great artist without his social network. This book explores that network: Rembrandt's early friends, family members ('blood friends'), artist friends, the connoisseurs who supported him and his friends in times of need. As a friend, Rembrandt went his own way. He made little effort to get on with the elite, and preferred to surround himself with people who understood art. He had strong ties with them, as he did with the members of his family. He portrayed them in remarkably informal paintings and prints, works that bring Rembrandt's private world to life.
