The question of memory recovery is now more important than ever with the controversy over delayed recall and false memory having spilled over from psychology to the courts and the public media. The Recovery of Unconscious Memories provides a comprehensive scientific treatment of a century of research that integrates for the first time the findings of the clinic and the laboratory. Included are authoritative treatments of hypnotic hypermnesia, free association and forced recall, the recovery of subliminal stimuli in dreams and fantasy, electrical recall, recovery of sensory-motor skills (also symptoms or "sick skills"), and modern mathematical decision theory analyses of true and false memories. Erdelyi's own ground-breaking research is presented, including his recent discovery of striking memory recoveries in long-delayed recall probes administered months after last testing. In a technical appendix, Erdelyi unveils for the first time a methodological solution to the problem of response bias in narrative recall.

The present study was designed to further examine the relationship between reminiscence, hypermnesia, and order retention. In Experiment 1, participants viewed a series of 25 high frequency nouns and then completed either three successive free recall tests (recalling to-be-recalled material in any order) or three successive serial recall tests (recalling to-be-recalled material in its exact presentation order). Experiment 2 also examined free and serial recall performance but used more ecologically-valid stimuli (20 actions that might occur in a park - throwing a Frisbee, reading a newspaper, etc.). The current findings are discussed in relation to general theories of hypermnesia and the implications for eyewitness testimony.

"This book is a mind opener to many important issues of human behavior." -- from the Foreword by James E. Birren Reminiscence work continues to develop in exciting and productive ways. In this volume, Webster and Haight along with multidisciplinary contributors point out ways of improving the quality of life through the processes of reminiscence. They present examples of cutting-edge treatments in reminiscence work. Organized into sections, the book sets the stage with a valuable review of the literature and then focuses on conceptual issues, developmental/sociocultural contexts, special populations, and clinical applications. Topics addressed include: reminiscence and development in late life, personal identity/social discontinuity, spiritual reminiscence, story-telling, integrating reminiscence and life review techniques with therapy, and reminiscence groups for people with dementia, among them. Critical Advances in Reminiscence Work will help shape the direction of the field in the future and should be read by every practitioner, researcher, and senior undergraduate/graduate student interested in biographical approaches.
