Il convegno, organizzato dall’unità di ricerca del Dipartimento di Scienze Politiche della Sapienza, nell’ambito del progetto europeo Remshoa. L’Italia e la deportazione degli ebrei nei territori occupati durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale 1939-1945, finanziato dall’Unione Europea nella linea Europe for Citizens, affronta la drammatica vicenda degli ebrei greci, una delle più numerose e antiche comunità del Mediterraneo, che venne di fatto annientata a seguito della persecuzione antisemita. Le riflessioni e relazioni degli oratori si interrogano sulla Shoah o ricostruiscono aspetti della particolare vicenda greca in relazione agli atteggiamenti dell’occupante italiano, nel tentativo di analizzarne il ruolo svolto nell’attuazione della “soluzione finale”, al di là degli stereotipi che hanno condizionato il dibattito storiografico e politico, e nella convinzione che solo la memoria del passato possa portare alla consapevolezza del presente, contribuendo a rafforzare quei valori che sono le fondamenta e la ragione ultima dell’Unione Europea.

In 1912, Italy occupied Rhodes, an Ottoman town inhabited by Greek Orthodox, Muslims, Jews, and Catholics. Rhodes became a territory of Italy’s empire in 1923 following the Treaty of Lausanne, only one year after Mussolini seized power in Rome. The Ottoman demise corresponded to the expansion of fascist imperialism in the Mediterranean. Both the Ottoman Young Turks and Italian colonial governors invoked the role of a "new generation" of youth in imperial rule. Generations of Empire investigates the relationship between state and society in light of successive transformations of imperial rule, rethinking Italian colonialism as post-Ottoman history. Andreas Guidi explores how communal life in the town of Rhodes was affected by the transition between these regimes, from an autocratic to a constitutional empire in late Ottoman years to Italian military occupation to fascist annexation. Based on archival sources in five languages from seven different countries, the book investigates generational dynamics in the domains of political activism, the family, education, work and leisure, and mobility. Generations of Empire offers a vivid picture of how a local society navigated large-scale social and political transformations in the modern Mediterranean.

The collective volume “Modern Forms of Work. A European Comparative Study” evokes the intent to embody a reflection focused on modern labour law issues from a comparative perspective. A first set of essays contains national reports on modern forms of work. This volume contains the Proceedings of the ‘Uralic Studies’ Seminar: The State of the Art of Uralic Studies: Tradition vs Innovation, held in Padua (Italy), November 12-13, 2016. Winner of the 5th Competition “Prize for PhD thesis on Disability” This thesis presents an analytical framework for conceptualizing and assessing well-being of people with disabilities within a multidimensional understanding of disability. It discusses different models of disability and shows how, by looking at disability at the capability level, it is possible to overcome the limits of the previous models, such as: medical, social and ICF model. Following a multidimensional concept of well-being, the methodology used comprises a cross-sectional and a multidimensional analysis of well-being of people with disabilities using data collected from a new dataset—the Blind—Disabled Capability Survey (BCS). The results point to the importance of various factors that contribute to enhancing people with disabilities capabilities and policy actions, such as the interaction between means and individual ability, opportunities, freedom of choice and policy responses.
