It all began one late afternoon when Yelena Ruidoso crawled her little five- or six-year-old body on the kitchen floor to escape the person molesting her. She managed to get away by telling him she needed to go to the bathroom. It wasn’t until years later, at a women’s conference, as she told her story, that she became compelled to write about it. In Rescued by the Light, Ruidoso tells about her childhood, the abuse she suffered, and how she saw a light that made her wonder if there was something bigger than this world that could help her. She shares how the Lord rescued her again and again throughout her life and offered her grace more times than she can count. Ruidoso describes a life of hope in a way only God could perpetuate, including miracles that happened throughout. She has passion to share the word of God and the blessings he still performs in the world today.

I was born in Chile South America. Having the Pacific Ocean on one side and the famous Andes Mountains on the other, my life was adventurous. However, though the beauty of nature surrounded me, turmoil traumatized much of my young life. In 1973 September 11, Santiago where we lived was taken over by a coup d’état. In 1976, we migrated to Canada as refugees. Upon landing in Canada, I had high hopes and dreams that as a family we had been given a second chance to start a new life. Within two years from arriving into Canada, at the tender age of 14 years old, with hardly a word of English and frightened to death I found myself living in the cold streets of Edmonton. In a near death experience, I saw Satan...his hands like claws began digging, tearing and pulling at my soul, ready to take me to HELL! My life was changed forever!

By My Side is my personal journey through the trials Ive faced with the Almighty God by my side the whole time. Even the darkest times in my life had a lighthouse. It took a lot of strength and courage to finally swim to safety. I had to give up my own control so God could take the pain away. When I finally hit bottom, there was nowhere to go but up. As I was searching for something to help me attempt to start my journey to recovery, I noticed his hand reaching out. He was always there, but unfortunately it took me reaching the bottom to finally reach the lighthouse. I hope this book helps others know that God is always there, whether we acknowledge him or not. He is just waiting for us to rely on him to take the weight of this world off of our shoulders. Gods love is indescribable. It is unconditional. It is safe. It is eternal. When I let God into my heart, I was finally able to start healing the wounds this world threw at me. By my side is the hope, strength, and love God provides during the earthy struggles we all face.

In Rescued Light, Geri Ann McLaughlin confesses a great love for the broken people, places, and things that can fill our days. Each poem is a small story of possibility woven with a musician's sense of rhythm and a painter's eye for detail. With confidence and grace, Geri Ann captures sound and emotion and moments in time that should crush us but instead make the world beautiful. -Paul Acampora, Author of I Kill the Mockingbird Azaray unable to read her incarcerated father's letter but carrying it with her everywhere as if it had just arrived; Vick in the handicapped swing, telling his teacher he wishes he could fly; Gabby for whom the world spun too fast and the moon rose too slow; Fred in love with long division, those numbers trapped inside little boxes. No poet appreciates the struggles and dignity of those she teaches more than the author of Rescued Light. Geri Ann McLaughlin brings both compassion and craft to all she encounters, whether it be Alliaria Petiolata or Florence the Mennonite ghost peering in the window. Today, all our small quirks, / all our twitches, blinks, and stutters / are accentuated. / Anything crazy is a diamond-spun maze. / Anything complex is alight. As poet and teacher, Geri Ann McLaughlin has spent her life rescuing-that is, cherishing-the light in her students, her family, and the natural world that surrounds us, stitching a patchwork quilt that captures the imperfect and astonishing beauty of all creation. Poetry, like light itself, rescues by paying attention and by honoring what it explores. There is so much light in this book, and we need it in these dark times. -Christopher Bursk, Author of The First Inhabitants of Arcadia In describing her student's eyes double-dutching with light, Geri Ann McLaughlin might well be speaking of her own poetry. Wherever her gaze lands, from the lives of her students to her own relationships and, yes, self, McLaughlin is unflinching. Of her students' she says, because I'd go in like a force and chase it down / and grab that life-stolen moment back / for you. Hers is not a victim's cry in It isn't fair, but a powerful voice which asserts, I claim grapple for my word . . . it stands for survival. Yet, more, Geri Ann McLaughlin gives us Lessons you didn't ever ask for. She gives us Rescued Light in its complex variations of authenticity, of truth. -Patricia Goodrich, Author of Red Mud, Woman with a Wandering Eye
