A Scandinavian furniture designer offers insight into his thinking about sitting and explains the philosophy that informs his pioneering chairs. For millions of years humans have led physically active lives. In recent centuries, however, industrialization has fostered passivity and the growing predominance of the sitting posture for more and more people. Increasingly, chairs and furniture for sitting have become standard pieces of equipment in the workplace, institutions, and private homes. These sitting devices were designed according to the established standard of the chair, based on the accepted western manner of sitting. In Rethinking Sitting, Scandinavian industrial designer Peter Opsvik addresses the issue of whether this is the only, and functionally best, design for the human body. When the various authorities on ergonomics promote their one and only “correct” sitting posture, he says all of them are right: Every recommended sitting posture is good. Opsvik sees it as his task to design chairs that allow as many different sitting postures as possible and make it easy to move and change frequently between positions. In this beautifully illustrated reference Opsvik offers insight into his thinking on the subject of sitting and explains the philosophy that informs his furniture designs. Rethinking Sitting contains important information for everyone who is interested, for professional, educational, or personal reasons, in sitting solutions.

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2007 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 1, University of Applied Sciences Kufstein Tirol, language: English, abstract: Abstract The importance of designing effective structures of office workplaces is becoming a fundamental task in Facility Management. If the office design does not respond to the needs of the user, the workforce will never be as affective if it could be; the consequence is a loss of money for the company. At the moment there is a huge need for research in this field because many enterprises are forced to occupy to new structures and designs but still use old fashioned ways of working. An office that is not adjustable to the individual needs of the worker causes dissatisfaction and less efficiency. If the workplace does not support the user by providing the appropriate environment and equipment, the workplace will hinder the employee instead of motivating him. As the influence of the effect of the office on the employees is still underestimated, the rethinking of the old structures forms the center of this work, as well as becoming aware of the coherencies between office features and the satisfaction of the user. The third chapter examines the psychological impacts of office design, such as human behavior and stress, besides the psychological, positive effect of ergonomic interior is mentioned. How can the performance of the employee be motivated is the important question. If the employee feels able to meet his or her own decisions and bears more responsibility in the specific scope of duties the work environment becomes more relaxed and productive in general. Often side effects like face-to-face internal communication are getting neglected and underestimated although they could be reached by improving the office shapes or utilizing Space Management. The crucial effect of such factors on business performance holds a lot of potential for improvement. With the corresponding furniture and equipment new styles of working become leading in the future, the old fashioned office types and types of working are getting replaced. Facility Management has the vital function to support this change in attitude towards work and make working more flexible by finding solutions in occupancy of space or office shape designs.

Have you ever entered a building or room for the first time and felt enhanced--felt your body relax and spirit elevate? The effect of human-made environments on learners’ brains is not subjective. According to research studies, we all have measurable responses to the design of a space. However, despite the many resources discussing how to decorate and design elementary school classrooms, few resources on middle and secondary level classroom design are available. This book fills that gap. Moreover, the purpose of this guide is to enhance learning spaces, boost student performances, and positively extend teachers’ influence.

Rethinking Aesthetics is the first book to bring together prominent voices in the fields of architecture, philosophy, aesthetics, and cognitive sciences to radically rethink the relationship between body and design. These essays argue that aesthetic experiences can be nurtured at any moment in everyday life, thanks to recent discoveries by researchers in neuroscience, phenomenology, somatics, and analytic philosophy of the mind, who have made the correlations between aesthetic cognition, the human body, and everyday life much clearer. The essays, by Yuriko Saito, Juhani Pallasmaa, and Richard Shusterman, among others, range from an integrated mind-body approach to chair design, to Zen Buddhist notions of mindfulness, to theoretical accounts of existential relationships with buildings, to present a full spectrum of possible inquiries. By placing the body in the center of design, Rethinking Aesthetics opens new directions for rethinking the limits of both essentialism and skepticism.

Design modelling has benefited from computation but in most projects to date there is still a strong division between computational design and simulation leading up to construction and the completed building that is cut off from the computational design modelling. The Design Modelling Symposium Berlin 2013 would like to challenge the participants to reflect on the possibility of computational systems that bridge design phase and occupancy of buildings. This rethinking of the designed artifact beyond its physical has had profound effects on other industries already. How does it affect architecture and engineering? At the scale of engineering and building systems new perspectives may open up by engaging built form as a continuous prototype, which can track and respond during use and serve as a real world implementation of its design model. This has been tried many times from intelligent façades to smart homes and networked grids but much of it was only technology driven and not approached from a more holistic design perspective.

p="" This highly informative and carefully presented book focuses on the fields of ergonomics/human factors and discusses the future of the community vis-à-vis health problems, productivity, aging, etc. Ergonomic intercession must be seen in light of its effect on productivity because ergonomic solutions will improve productivity as the reduction of environmental stressors, awkward postures and efforts lead to a reduction in task execution time. The book provides promising evidence that the field of ergonomics continues to thrive and develop deeper insights into how work environments, products and systems can be developed to meet needs, demands and limitations of humans and how they can support productivity improvements. Some of the themes covered are anthropometry and workplace design, biomechanics and modelling in ergonomics, cognitive and environmental ergonomics, ergonomic intervention and productivity, ergonomics in transport, mining, agriculture and forestry, health systems, work physiology and sports ergonomics, etc. This book is beneficial to academicians, policymakers and the industry alike. ^
