Multi-stakeholder collaboration is an important process that can serve as a tool and strategy to solve complex issues and problems such as transforming national food systems towards more sustainable outcomes. This guide aims to support stakeholders working at all levels of the food system in the implementation of actions to transform their food systems. Centered on 5 building blocks underpinning successful multi-stakeholder collaboration for food systems transformation, the guide uses these constructions to illustrate ingredients of the process and show the interconnectedness of the steps needed to be successful. The guide also contains two annexes with a list of tools, and assessment questions. Annex 1 highlights a range of tools to support facilitators and participants with deeper guidance on a specific topic. Annex 2 contains a checklist of questions, customized to the content provided under each Building Block, and serves as an ongoing monitoring tool that can be used alongside the recommendations provided.

The global agri-food system, from field to fork, is failing to nourish billions of people properly, is responsible for nearly a third of all greenhouse gas emissions and is a major driver of biodiversity loss. As it currently operates, this system imposes significant hidden costs on the environment, on the workers who produce ‘cheap’ food in dangerous or precarious conditions, consumers, and society as a whole. These hidden costs, or ‘externalities’, include water pollution remediation, social support for underpaid workers, and public health costs related to diet-related diseases, none of which are captured by traditional economic metrics. Externalities are prevalent in all sectors of the economy, not just agri-food systems, and are systematically ignored in conventional accounting and reporting systems. This omission leads to distorted market signals that encourage unsustainable business practices, the consequences of which are borne by society, particularly disadvantaged communities, and will weigh heavily on future generations while the polluters reap financial rewards. Addressing externalities is therefore essential to building an economic system that supports sustainable development.

Food systems are currently facing tremendous challenges and changes globally. On the one hand, population growth, urbanization, and increased affluence are expected to catalyze dietary shifts and broader changes to food systems in the coming decades. On the other hand, food systems (and changes therein) have major environmental and social ramifications. As a result, fostering the sustainable transformation of food systems is seen as one of the major challenges for meeting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). However, understanding food systems, and transforming them in a sustainable manner is far from straightforward, especially as our food systems have multiple intersecting economic, social, technological, and cultural dimensions. Moreover, food systems encompass different stakeholders operating at different levels with enormously different interests and worldviews.

Youth engagement is pivotal to the transformation of our agrifood systems. Simultaneously, digital technologies have contributed to the development of our agrifood systems and are an increasingly important part of young persons’ lives. Digital technologies can therefore play a role in youth engagement toward the transformation of agrifood systems. This report explores this question through a multidimensional approach, offering insights into how youth can (1) utilize digital technologies, (2) develop these technologies, (3) engage in activities and projects through digital tools and (4) participate in decision-making processes through the use of digital technologies, ultimately encouraging their active involvement in the transformation of agrifood systems. The Young Scientists Group (YSG) conducted a comprehensive literature review which highlights various relevant case studies, together with a survey capturing the perspectives and experiences of youth. The results show that, for agrifood systems transformation initiatives, digital technologies provide youth with benefits such as being able to conduct tasks more efficiently, reachwider audiences and form collaborations. However, there are challenges related to digital technology use including accessibility to these tools and the need for training and education in using them – both among youth and the collaborators they interact with. Additionally, although digital technologies can increase opportunities for engaging in decision-making, they do not necessarily ensure these. Based on the findings, we recommend policymakers and practitioners: (1) increase equitable access to digital technologies, (2) build capacities for digital skills development and training, (3) enhance youth engagement and inclusivity in decision-making processes which use digital technologies, and (4) engage youth in agrifood systems transformation initiatives involving digital technologies.
