Richard Barnfield is sometimes considered the rival poet in Shakespeare's sonnets but has been relatively neglected in studies of early modern English poetry. This edited collection situates Barnfield's position in early modern literature beyond his best known work, The Affectionate Shepherd, exploring his classical education, wider homoerotic verse and distinctive aesthetic literary style. Making use of different approaches, the essays in this volume tackle issues of intertextuality and interdiscursivity through the poet's use of classical sources and poetic genres such as the sonnet and epyllia. Particular attention is devoted to the relationship between Barnfield's work and that of his contemporaries. Traditionally limited to a comparison with Shakespeare's output, this volume places Barnfield in the literary panorama of his time, giving specific attention to those features which make his work stand out. Using corpus linguistics tools, the poet's entire body of work is further elucidated through the structure and meter of his sonnets as well as formal and functional aspects of his use of irony. Written by an international group of scholars, this collection celebrates the 450th anniversary of Barnfield's birth and makes his poetry essential to the study of early modern literature.

This new examination of Shakespeare’s four Roman tragedies (Julius Caesar, Titus Andronicus, Coriolanus and Antony and Cleopatra) revisits Shakespeare’s dramatic recreations of ancient Rome in the light of considerations of place: the places from which Shakespeare initiated his imaginative reconstructions, where plays are written and performed the places he constructed within the plays, the places the plays imagine and recreate, together with the places from which he derived them the places within which we as readers and spectators experience those creations, where such plays are read, viewed and critically analysed. Alongside this analysis the book explores contemporary critical debates and the uses of place and space in selected modern adaptations – the Taviani brothers’ Italian film Caesar Must Die, Julie Taylor’s film Titus, John Osborne’s play A Place Calling Itself Rome and Ahmed Shawqi’s Arabic Death of Cleopatra. The book provides a descriptive, palimpsestic map of the places within which Shakespeare’s Roman plays operate, tracing the contours of Rome’s Republic and Empire, overlaid with the Europe of Shakespeare’s day, in which a Romanised London looked with fascination towards the East, towards Rome and Alexandria. Equipped with such a map we can attempt to do what Shakespeare did: to recreate ancient Rome in conjunction and rapprochement with its early modern and modern counterparts.

Shakespeare’s Shrews: Italian Traditions of Paradoxes and the Woman’s Debate investigates the echoes of two early modern discourses—paradoxical writing and the woman’s question or querelle des femmes—in the representation of the “Shakespearean shrew” in The Taming of the Shrew, Much Ado About Nothing, and Othello. This comparative cross‐cultural study explores the English reception of these traditions through the circulation, translation, and adaptation of Italian works such as Ludovico Ariosto’s Orlando Furioso, Baldassare Castiglione’s Il libro del cortegiano, and Ercole and Torquato Tasso’s Dell’ammogliarsi. The enticing interplay of these two discourses is further complicated by their presence in the writing of early modern male and female authors. The examination of Shakespeare’s adaptation of these traditions in his “shrew” character highlights two key findings: the thematic fragmentation of the woman’s question and the evolving role of paradoxes, from figures of speech to “figures of thought”, both influenced by the gender of the speaker.

Antonfrancesco Grazzini’s plays, La Spiritata (The Possessed Girl) and La Strega (The Witch), are available in English for the first time, with notes and an “Introduction.” These plays deal with witchcraft, superstition, sexuality, and abortion. The context for such themes is analyzed in the “Introduction.” Grazzini enhanced literary drama with elements from popular performances. He influenced other playwrights, including in England, where The Possessed Girl was adapted as the Elizabethan comedy, The Bugbears. Writer and linguist John Florio used Grazzini’s plays in his lexicon of Italian for English learners. Grazzini celebrated artistic and popular traditions of Renaissance Florence; he is significant for writing and preserving many literary genres, especially the burlesque and carnivalesque. He participated in Florentine spectacle and theater, as a writer of plays, a composer of interludes, and a chronicler of festive events. His importance to the development of the Italian language is evident in his plays.

This book describes the development of the literary riddle in Renaissance Italy, when poets appropriated riddles from oral tradition, combined them with the conventions of literature, and paired them with solutions that could be checked after reading. This book includes an original theoretical framework for the investigation of riddles, dividing riddles into categories based on their enigmatic link. A section about the social uses of riddles in early modern Italy shows how riddles were routinely exchanged at soirees and in the activities of academies and congreghe, all environments where the folk qualities of the riddle could be playfully appreciated. The riddle became a key element in narrative works by Giovanni Francesco Straparola and Ascanio de’ Mori, and, for the first time, it fueled enough collections of poems to trigger an entire genre. Examples will come from Angelo Cenni, Daphne di Piazza, Girolamo Musici, Tommaso Stigliani, Giulio Cesare Croce, Antonio Malatesti, and many others.

This volume breaks new ground in the exploration of Anglo-Italian cultural relations: it presents analyses of a wide range of early modern Italian texts adapted into contemporary English culture, often through intermediary French translations. When transposed into English, their Italian origin was frequently categorized as marvellous and consequently censured because of its strangeness: thus, English translators often gave their public a moralized and tamed version of Italy’s uniqueness. This volume’s contributors show that an effective way of moralizing Italian custom was to exoticize its origins, in order to protect the English public from an Italianate influence. This ubiquitous moralization is visible in the evolution of the concept of tragedy, and in the overtly educational aim acquired by the Italian novella, adapted for an allegedly female audience. Through the analysis of various literary genres (novella, epic poem, play, essay), the volume focuses on the mechanisms of appropriation and rejection of Italian culture through imported topoi and narremes.

This book asks new questions about how and why Shakespeare engages with source material, and about what should be counted as sources in Shakespeare studies. The essays demonstrate that source study remains an indispensable mode of inquiry for understanding Shakespeare, his authorship and audiences, and early modern gender, racial, and class relations, as well as for considering how new technologies have and will continue to redefine our understanding of the materials Shakespeare used to compose his plays. Although source study has been used in the past to construct a conservative view of Shakespeare and his genius, the volume argues that a rethought Shakespearean source study provides opportunities to examine models and practices of cultural exchange and memory, and to value specific cultures and difference. Informed by contemporary approaches to literature and culture, the essays revise conceptions of sources and intertextuality to include terms like "haunting," "sustainability," "microscopic sources," "contamination," "fragmentary circulation" and "cultural conservation." They maintain an awareness of the heterogeneity of cultures along lines of class, religious affiliation, and race, seeking to enhance the opportunity to register diverse ideas and frameworks imported from foreign material and distant sources.
