Excerpt from The Contemporary History of the French Revolution The French Revolution may be described as the greatest storm which ever swept over France; its fury ravaged that country, and the fringe of its clouds, its occasional flashes, and its stray thunder bolts, alarmed, if they did not devastate, every nation of Europe. Excerpt from The French Revolution a Short History The object of this book is similar to that with which, a few years ago, I wrote a short biography of Napoleon. The main outlines of the Revolution, the proportion and relation of things, tend to become obscured under the accumulation of historical detail that is now proceeding. This is an attempt, therefore, to disentangle from the mass of details the shape, the movement, the significance of this great historical cataclysm. To keep the outline clear I have deliberately avoided mentioning the names of many subordinate actors; thinking that if nothing essential was connected with them the mention of their names would only tend to confuse matters. Similarly with incidents, I have omitted a few, such as the troubles at Avignon, and changed the emphasis on others, judging freely their importance and not following the footsteps of my predecessors, as in the case of the capture of the Bastille, the importance of which was vastly exaggerated by early writers on the subject. Excerpt from The French Revolution and Modern French Socialism: A Comparative Study of the Principles of the French Revolution and the Doctrines of Modern French Socialism On the other hand, there is a real and interesting separation in the social philosophy of the two doctrines. The later theory asks that an additional right be as sured to the individual, and therefore that government assume one new function, and it bases its claim for these changes on an idea of social progress different from that of the Revolutionists. The following pages aim to demonstrate these like nesses and differences. If the matter they present ap pears insufficient or the result of immature judgment, it is hoped it will, in any event, be an inspiration for some stronger work along lines which, it seems to the writer, cannot but be helpful in adding to a better understanding of latter-day problems. Excerpt from The Revolutionary Spirit Preceding the French Revolution Under these circumstances, it Should be needless to com mend the scientific study of the phenomena of the revolu tionary epoch to all thoughtful men. Histories of the French Revolution abound but too many of them are elaborate pleadings for one or other of the parties concerned in the struggle, not without an eye to the illustration and en forcement of the writer's own principles or they are vivid pictures drawn by literary artists, which may enable the reader to see, but do not greatly help him to understand, the Revolution. Most of us, however, can be trusted to bring a goodly store of both partizanship and imagination to the study of the past; what most lack is the scientific temper which aims only at accuracy in matters of fact, and logical impartiality in drawing conclusions therefrom. The Coming Of The French Revolution written by Georges Lefebvre and has been published by Princeton University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005 with History categories.

The Coming of the French Revolution remains essential reading for anyone interested in the origins of this great turning point in the formation of the modern world. First published in 1939, on the eve of the Second World War, and suppressed by the Vichy government, this classic work explains what happened in France in 1789, the first year of the French Revolution. Georges Lefebvre wrote history "from below"--a Marxist approach. Here, he places the peasantry at the center of his analysis, emphasizing the class struggles in France and the significant role they played in the coming of the revolution. Eloquently translated by the historian R. R. Palmer and featuring an introduction by Timothy Tackett that provides a concise intellectual biography of Lefebvre and a critical appraisal of the book, this Princeton Classics edition continues to offer fresh insights into democracy, dictatorship, and insurrection.
