Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2010 in the subject Business economics - Offline Marketing and Online Marketing, grade: 1,0, University of St Andrews (School of Management), language: English, abstract: Owing to the phenomenal growth of online social networks and the resulting interest of marketers in this new medium, this thesis investigates user perception of targeted advertisements on Facebook, the world’s largest and fastest growing social network. Based on a critical literature review, results of previous research studies, and expert interviews with social media practitioners, the author develops a conceptual framework consisting of seven factors that are theorised to impact on how users perceive personalised ads in a social network environment. This framework is partially verified on an empirical basis by means of an online survey among 97 Facebook users. The results provide novel and useful insights into user perception of targeted ads on Facebook that could be used as guidelines for practitioners and as a starting point for further studies.

Networks Without A Cause written by Geert Lovink and has been published by Polity this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-03-19 with Social Science categories.

With the vast majority of Facebook users caught in a frenzy of ‘friending’, ‘liking’ and ‘commenting’, at what point do we pause to grasp the consequences of our info-saturated lives? What compels us to engage so diligently with social networking systems? Networks Without a Cause examines our collective obsession with identity and self-management coupled with the fragmentation and information overload endemic to contemporary online culture. With a dearth of theory on the social and cultural ramifications of hugely popular online services, Lovink provides a path-breaking critical analysis of our over-hyped, networked world with case studies on search engines, online video, blogging, digital radio, media activism and the Wikileaks saga. This book offers a powerful message to media practitioners and theorists: let us collectively unleash our critical capacities to influence technology design and workspaces, otherwise we will disappear into the cloud. Probing but never pessimistic, Lovink draws from his long history in media research to offer a critique of the political structures and conceptual powers embedded in the technologies that shape our daily lives.

All around the world, societies are experiencing an explosion of organizations and organizing: community clubs, religious groups, social movements, as well as schools, hospitals, businesses and government agencies, increasingly take the form of complex and formal organization. Why? Why is global society recast in this format and why so fiercely? This book explores various dimensions of the trends of expansion, formalization, and standardization of organizing worldwide by exploring such organizational legacies as accounting, business management, corporate social responsibility, and performance benchmarks. Featuring contributions from prominent academics, the book argues that these processes can be attributed to globalization and to its specific tendencies of universalism, rationalization, and rise of the modern notion of the strongly bounded and purposive social actor. An application of institutional arguments to global issues, the book will be of interest to academics and researchers of Organization Studies, Sociology, Political Science, and Geography.
