En la primera parte de este volumen, dedicada a las producciones de sigillata africana en época alto-imperial, se analiza el origen de esta cerámica, africano pero con importantes influencias itálicas y galas, situando, a su vez, cronológica y geográficamente, los primeros talleres africanos. Aborda también la compleja cuestión del declive y desaparición de esta primera producción de sigillata africana, en la segunda mitad del siglo III, describiendo el proceso de degradación de la pasta y del barniz. Al mismo tiempo que la sigillata clara A entra en crisis, aparecen nuevos tipos de sigillata, A/D, A/C y C. Por esta razón, el autor rechaza la idea de la crisis del siglo III. La decadencia de la anteriormente citada sigillata clara A se explica por el triunfo de una nueva cultura del África romana, consecuencia de una autonomía progresivamente adquirida y de un liberalismo imperial generalizado en el siglo III. Se describen las nuevas tipologías aparecidas en el siglo III. De este estudio tipológico el autor pasa a realizar un estudio más amplio de historia y geografía económica, tratando los talleres, los flujos comerciales, la agricultura africana....Ya en la segunda parte el autor recorre una serie de talleres, Uthina, El Mahrine, Pheradi Maius, describiendo arqueológicamente al detalle estos yacimientos y su ocupación, ahondando así en el estudio de las producciones tardías de sigillata africana..Por último, integrando los datos de las dos partes precedentes, el autor hace un estudio de las incidencias tanto económicas como sociales de la producción de sigillatas africanas: organización de la producción y circulación, tanto a nivel local como a gran escala de la sigillata africana.
