People naturally identify the rhythm of music as they tap their feet and sway in time with the beat. Underlying such motions is an act of cognition that is not easily reproduced in a computer program or automated by machine. "Rhythm and Transforms" asks (and answers) the question: How can we build a device that can "tap its foot" along with the music? The result is a tool for detecting and measuring the temporal aspects of a musical performance: the periodicities, the regularities (and irregularities), the beat, the rhythm. The impact of such a "rhythm meter" on music theory and on the design of sound processing electronics is described. It allows discussion of the relationship between cognitive processing of temporal information and mathematical techniques used to describe and understand regularities in data. This book will interest engineers and others interested in the design of audio devices such as musical synthesizers, special effects devices, drum machines, and electronic keyboards. It will be useful to musicians and composers who exploit computer-based tools; arrangers, musicologists, and others interested in musical analysis; and those interested in the way the ear works, and how this influences the types of sound patterns we like to listen to.

Mathematics Of Musical Rhythm written by Jason Yust and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-09-06 with Music categories.

This book presents original research applying mathematics to musical rhythm, with a focus on computational methods, theoretical approaches, analysis of rhythm in folk and global music traditions, syncopation, and maximal evenness. It honours the legacy of computer scientist and music theorist Godfried Toussaint. In addition to addressing a topic pioneered by Toussaint, application of mathematics to representation of musical rhythms, the volume also builds upon his interest in analysis of music traditions outside the European classical canon and the use of computational methods. Empirical contributions include a study of timing in Scandinavian polska performance showing that timing interacts with rhythmic features and a study of vocal melody rhythm in pre- and post-millennial popular music, showing significant differences in tempo, rhythmic density, and repetition in the two corpora. Theoretical contributions include a survey of timeline rhythms of African and African diasporic musics showing the prevalence of rhythms of a special type related to maximal evenness, an application of matrix algebra to rhythm and syncopation with analysis of clave rhythms, a ragtime corpus, and Balinese gong cycles, and a mathematical development of a new classification of smooth rhythms using a “shadow rhythm” algorithm suggested by Toussaint. The volume also includes an original composition by Tom Johnson and a personal recollection of Toussaint by Francisco Gómez-Martín. This volume will be a key resource for academics, researchers, and advanced students of music, musicology, music analyses, mathematical music theory, computational musicology, and music informatics. It was originally published as a special issue of the Journal of Mathematics and Music.

The Moving Body In The Aural Skills Classroom written by Diane Urista and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016 with Education categories.

The Moving Body in the Aural Skills Classroom-influenced by Dalcroze-eurhythmics-is a practical guide for college-level teachers and students interested in integrating the moving body into the traditional aural skills classroom. What distinguishes this book from other texts is its central concern with movement-to-music as a tool for developing musical perception and the kinesthetic aspects humans experience as performers. Moving to music and watching others move cultivates an active, multi-sensory learning experience, in which students learn by discovery and from each other. Improvisatory and expressive elements are built into exercises to encourage a dynamic link between musical training and artistic performance. Designed for a three- to four-semester undergraduate curriculum, the book contains a wealth of exercises that teach rhythmic, melodic, harmonic and formal concepts. Exercises not only develop the ear, but also awaken the muscular and nervous system, foster mind-body connections, strengthen the powers of concentration (being in the "musical now"), develop inner-hearing, short- and long-term memory, multi-tasking skills, limb autonomy, and expressive freedom. Exercises are presented in a graded, though flexible order allowing you to select individual exercises in any sequence. Activities involve movement through space (traveling movement) as well as movement in place (stationary movement) for those teaching in small classrooms. The text can be used as a teacher's manual, a supplementary aural-skills textbook, or as a stand-alone reference in a course dedicated to eurhythmics. Movement exercises are designed to enhance and work in conjunction with musical examples presented in other texts. Many exercises also provide an effective aural/sensory tool in the music theory classroom to complement verbal explanations. The approach integrates easily into any traditional college or conservatory classroom and is compatible with the following systems: fixed do, moveable do, and scale degrees. A companion website accompanies the text featuring undergraduate students performing select exercises.

This book situates Joyce's critical writings within the context of an emerging discourse on the psychology of rhythm, suggesting that A Portrait of the Artist dramatizes the experience of rhythm as the subject matter of the modernist novel. Including comparative analyses of the lyrical prose of Virginia Woolf and the 'cadences' of the Imagists, Martin outlines a new concept of the 'modern period' that describes the interaction between poetry and prose in the literature of the early twentieth century.
