Discussions regarding regulation of endocrine disruptors (EDs) and combination effects are ongoing in Europe. Among the central topics of discussion are establishment of criteria for identification of EDs, whether there is a threshold for endocrine disrupting effects and how EDs should be handled within relevant EU regulations. In addition, a roadmap for further EU work regarding combination effects has been presented, but more detailed discussions are needed regarding scientific issues and regulatory intervention. Possible Member State initiatives to provide input to these EU processes were discussed in a Nordic workshop held in Oslo in November 2013. This report describes the workshop presentations, initiatives and thoughts from each of the Nordic countries, the plenary discussions, and the main workshop outcomes.

Endocrine disruptors (EDs) are substances that adversely affect hormone function. The effects by EDs are thought to depend on both dose and timing of exposure, especially during foetal development. The upcoming EU regulation on identification of EDs, application biocides and pesticides, will have an impact on all actors of the food chain. The consequences of a ban of EDs in foods were discussed in a Nordic workshop (Uppsala, 29-30 Nov 2016) where risk assessors and managers from Nordic food authorities, industry, trade associations, consumer organizations and researchers were represented. It was recognized by all participants that a ban was particularly challenging for the production chain since there are few viable alternatives. A harmonized EU legislation based on scientific risk assessment was preferred compared to national specific legislation as it treats all the actors equally.

""Hormone Disruptors Guide"" explores the pervasive issue of endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) and their impact on human health. These chemicals, found in everyday products like plastics, pesticides, and cosmetics, can interfere with our hormonal systems. The book highlights how even low doses of EDCs can pose a threat, affecting reproductive health, metabolism, and neurological function. You'll learn about the science behind EDCs, including how they mimic or block natural hormones, leading to adverse effects. The book uniquely combines scientific insights with practical strategies for reducing EDC exposure in your daily life. It progresses from introducing the concept of endocrine disruption and examining major classes of EDCs to detailing their mechanisms of interference. Discover how consumer choices regarding food, home products, and personal care items can significantly impact your exposure levels. By understanding the risks and taking proactive steps, readers can protect their health and contribute to a healthier environment.

During recent decades, millions of tonnes of man-made chemicals have been produced and released into the environment, with very little safety testing. Many of these chemical substances have been found to interfere with the endocrine system and modulate its function. This book not only overviews the effects of endocrine/disrupting substances on human health, but also addresses the regulatory problems from the point of view of international organisations, including the WHO, the EU, and the European Chlorine Industry. This volume contains the proceedings of a workshop held at the International Hippocrates Foundation on Kos Island, Greece, in September 1999. The workshop was part of the activities of the ASPIS project, which aims at raising awareness of environmental health impacts among multidisciplinary groups. The contributions to this volume are the result of the interaction of participants at the workshop. As such, it addresses the issue of endocrine disrupters from many different points of view and allows the subject to be approached by a multidisciplinary readership, including: decision makers, medical doctors, environmental experts, post/and undergraduate students, lawyers, engineers, and journalists.
