Since its inception in the early 1980s, H( optimization theory has become the control methodology of choice in robust feedback analysis and design. The purpose of this monograph is to present, in a tutorial fashion, a self contained operator theoretic approach to the H( control for disturbed parameter systems, that is, systems which admit infinite dimensional state spaces. Such systems arise for problems modelled by partial differential equations or which have time delays. Besides elucidating the mathematics of H( control, extensive treatment is given to its physical and engineering underpinnings. The techniques given in the book are carefully illustrated by two benchmark problems: an unstable system with a time delay which comes from the control of the X-29, and the control of a Euler-Bernoulli flexible beam with Kelvin-Voigt damping.

This volume is the second of the three volume publication containing the proceedings of the 1989 International Symposium on the Mathemat ical Theory of Networks and Systems (MTNS-89), which was held in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, June 19-23, 1989 The International Symposia MTNS focus attention on problems from system and control theory, circuit theory and signal processing, which, in general, require application of sophisticated mathematical tools, such as from function and operator theory, linear algebra and matrix theory, differential and algebraic geometry. The interaction between advanced mathematical methods and practical engineering problems of circuits, systems and control, which is typical for MTNS, turns out to be most effective and is, as these proceedings show, a continuing source of exciting advances. The interest in control of nonlinear partial differential equation (PDE) sys tems has been triggered by the need to achieve tight distributed control of transport-reaction processes that exhibit highly nonlinear behavior and strong spatial variations. Drawing from recent advances in dynamics of PDE systems and nonlinear control theory, control of nonlinear PDEs has evolved into a very active research area of systems and control. This book the first of its kind- presents general methods for the synthesis of nonlinear and robust feedback controllers for broad classes of nonlinear PDE sys tems and illustrates their applications to transport-reaction processes of industrial interest. Specifically, our attention focuses on quasi-linear hyperbolic and parabolic PDE systems for which the manipulated inputs and measured and controlled outputs are distributed in space and bounded. We use geometric and Lyapunov-based control techniques to synthesize nonlinear and robust controllers that use a finite number of measurement sensors and control actuators to achieve stabilization of the closed-loop system, output track ing, and attenuation of the effect of model uncertainty. The controllers are successfully applied to numerous convection-reaction and diffusion-reaction processes, including a rapid thermal chemical vapor deposition reactor and a Czochralski crystal growth process. The book includes comparisons of the proposed nonlinear and robust control methods with other approaches and discussions of practical implementation issues.

"Robust Control Systems" gives a self-contained introduction to modern Control Theory. It thus adds a textbook to the existing research-oriented literature on Robust Control. The author lays emphasis on the modern aspects of the design of controllers with prescribed performance and robustness properties. This thesis deals with the robustness of stability of distributed, linear-time-invariant (DLTI) feedback control systems. The main goal is to formulate a practical method for evaluating feedback designs based on the actual DLTI system characteristics. As a result, a design procedure can be developed for DLTI systems to synthesize feedback controllers that are guaranteed to be closed-loop stable. We have developed a robustness characterization for DLTI systems, and have shown that linear quadratic (LQ) optimal control systems have nice robustness properties and can serve as good reference designs for the actual implementation of the feedback controller. We have studied in detail linear hereditary differential systems and a vibration suppression problem for a flexible beam. We stress the study of implementable controllers, which are finite dimensional, in contrast to optimal controllers that are typically infinite-dimensional. However, one can integrate our multivariable robustness results with the LQ optimal control to derive a finite-dimensional suboptimal control law which is closed-loop stable. We show how this can be done by using spatially-sampled measurements along the flexible beam.
