Forming healthy, solid relationships with their typical peers is a major challenge for most children with autism spectrum disorders. This comprehensive social skills curriculum has the dual purpose of helping educators develop appropriate social skills in children with pervasive developmental disorders while also fostering understanding and tolerance among typical peers and school staff. The curriculum includes built-in booster lessons, so the child receives multiple presentations of the material, thus reinforcing the lesson for better understanding and generalization.

The SOS: Social skills in Our Schools Transition Program is a four-year comprehensive curriculum, that prepares adolescents and young adults with autism spectrum disorder and other social interaction challenges (e.g., communication disorders, attention deficit disorder, social anxiety) for a productive adult life. The focus of the program is developing effective social behavior and communication at work and play (with family, friends, and in romantic relationships), on self-regulation/coping, planning and organization, self-advocacy, insight, and independent living skills. The goal to remove obstacles to success is achieved through didactic instruction and cognitive behavioral therapeutic activities in a skills group, as well as through peer mentoring and parent support. Planned practice and real-life experiences link individual skills together and promote generalization. Written and tested in collaboration with New York City Public School staff, this program is practical and innovative. It is effectively delivered in high schools and colleges, in clinics and other therapeutic settings as well.

Some children and young adolescents find it much harder to learn and flexibly use social skills. They can struggle with making friends, joining in, reading others' feelings, bouncing back constructively following an upset, coping with put-downs or just dealing appropriately with day to day frustrations. "What's the Buzz?" is an easy-to-implement, 16 lesson play-based social skills training program that will improve student confidence, relationships and reduce conflict. Written for teachers who support children and adolescents who may struggle with life for a variety of reasons, this book will help them to: expand their socialisation skills, for example, 'how-to' meet people and be friendly, gain attention in positive ways, follow instructions, give compliments and maintain conversations; understand their feelings and develop an emotional resiliency to better cope with the inevitable emotional highs and lows life offers; learn 'how-to' read the feelings of others and appropriately respond to their needs; value positive thinking, for example, how-to stay calm under pressure, deal with worry, handle disappointment and best respond to put-downs and bullying; and, participate in play-based activities and games, so that they acquire skills incidentally. Designed for use in schools by teachers, school counsellors, special needs co-ordinators, teaching assistants, parents and allied health professionals, the role plays, games and team building activities presented in each lesson will help to build class unity and cohesion, whilst the template format allows students to experience success, feel confident and be ready to develop more complex skills.

Many students struggle to learn important social skills, like interacting positively with others and starting conversations. The time spent on lecturing in schools means that kids don't always have the time to use these skills in the classroom. The lack of social-emotional intelligence and the fact that school learning standards still are amiss when it comes to social-emotional learning are standing in the way of helping our children become what they are truly capable of becoming. Schools must implement social-emotional learning (SEL) programs into their schools. We must prepare our youth to be more humane and socially competent. If we fail, we will continue to have a generation of socially and emotionally inept youth. Our society's well-being and safety will continue to be at stake. Hardship lost opportunities, and damaged relationships with self and others will continue without improved social-emotional intelligence. This book is perfect for any educator or adult who works with children and is concerned about their social-emotional learning. So, don't wait any longer to join these amazing people.
