Basic notions in the field of creole studies, including the category of “creole languages” itself, have been questioned in recent years: Can creoles be defined on structural or on purely sociohistorical grounds? Can creolization be understood as a graded process, possibly resulting in different degrees of “radicalness” and intermediate language types (“semi-creoles”)? If so, by which linguistic structures are these characterized, and by which extralinguistic conditions have they been brought about? Which are the linguistic mechanisms underlying processes of restructuring, and how did grammaticalization and reanalysis shape the reorganization of linguistic, specifically morphosyntactic structures commonly called “creolization”? What is the role of language contact, language mixing, substrates and superstrates, or demographic factors in these processes? This volume provides select and revised papers from a 1998 colloquium at the University of Regensburg in which these questions were addressed. 19 contributions by renowned scholars discuss structural, sociohistorical and theoretical aspects, building upon case studies of both Romance-based and English-oriented creoles. Se aprende a ver como se aprende a sentir. Desde pequeños se nos enseña a organizar el mundo, poner en relación significativa los estímulos que percibimos del exterior; si esto es así, es probable que determinados estímulos, aun estando frente a nuestros ojos, no podamos verlos, sentirlos, registrar significativamente su presencia, si antes no nos hemos educado para ello, vale decir, si no hemos flexibilizado o dilatado nuestros códigos para procesar aquella nueva experiencia sensorial. Podemos estar de acuerdo con esta idea y aceptarla sin mayor problema, sin embargo, creo que la dificultad está en su opuesto inmediato, es decir, que se nos ha enseñado una ceguera, una limitada capacidad perceptual sobre lo propio, sobre aquello que está a nuestro lado, incluso, aquello que nos constituye. La perspectiva que desarrolla Isabel Galindo en Tejedores de sabiduría insurgente. Cine documental y narrativas desobedientes contra el destierro, contribuye a que cada lector reconozca la magnitud de su ceguera, de algún modo y en alguna medida estimula nuestra retina y nuestros corazones para procesar tantos otros estímulos, muchos de ellos dolorosos, que complejizan nuestro estar en el mundo. Fue a la luz del despejado cielo quiteño cuando conocí a Isabel Galindo, en las intensas aulas de la Universidad Andina Simón Bolívar en Ecuador, llamada con cariño La Andina, un conjunto de coincidencias y una admiración creciente alimentaron nuestras conversaciones, algo de esos diálogos están poderosamente desarrollados en esta entrega.
