The book focuses on Schema Matching, the task of (semi-)automatically identifying semantic correspondences between elements of metadata structures, such as, database schemas, ontologies, and XML message formats. It is of key importance for interoperability and data integration in numerous applications, such as data warehousing, integration of web-sources, message mapping in E-business, and ontology alignment on the Semantic Web. However, in today's systems, schema matching is still manual; a time-consuming, tedious, and error-prone process, which becomes increasingly impractical considering the high complexity and number of schemas and data sources to be dealt with. In this book, the author Do Hong Hai describes the architecture, functionality, and evaluation of the schema matching system COMA++ (Combining Matchers), which was developed by himself in his Ph.d thesis. COMA++ represents a generic and customizable system for semi-automatic schema matching, which can combine different match algorithms in a flexible way. In comprehensive evaluations using large real-world schemas and ontologies, COMA++ has shown high quality as compared to the state of the art, proving its practicability for different domains. In addition, the book describes a new data integration approach, GenMapper (Generic Mapper), which utilizes instance-level correspondences between objects of data sources.

Schema matching is the task of providing correspondences between concepts describing the meaning of data in various heterogeneous, distributed data sources. Schema matching is one of the basic operations required by the process of data and schema integration, and thus has a great effect on its outcomes, whether these involve targeted content delivery, view integration, database integration, query rewriting over heterogeneous sources, duplicate data elimination, or automatic streamlining of workflow activities that involve heterogeneous data sources. Although schema matching research has been ongoing for over 25 years, more recently a realization has emerged that schema matchers are inherently uncertain. Since 2003, work on the uncertainty in schema matching has picked up, along with research on uncertainty in other areas of data management. This lecture presents various aspects of uncertainty in schema matching within a single unified framework. We introduce basic formulations of uncertainty and provide several alternative representations of schema matching uncertainty. Then, we cover two common methods that have been proposed to deal with uncertainty in schema matching, namely ensembles, and top-K matchings, and analyze them in this context. We conclude with a set of real-world applications. Finding semantically correct mappings between the schemas of two data sources is a fundamental problem in many important database applications. But it cannot be fully automated, so user input is necessary. This dissertation presents SCIA, a system that assists users in creating executable mappings between a source schema and a target schema by automating simple matches and finding critical points where user input is necessary and maximally useful. SCIA handles complex mappings involving n-to-m matches with semantic functions and conditions, which often exist in practice, but are ignored in most related systems. It outputs mappings in both correspondence format and executable view format that can transform source data into target instances. Formal experiments show SCIA significantly reduces total user effort by using path contexts and combination of multiple matching algorithms to find critical points, and help users at those points by asking them specific questions with sufficient context and suggestions for adding semantic information for data transformation, such as join and grouping conditions. Moreover, SCIA has semantic models for schemas and schema mappings using algebra. This dissertation also gives principles for schema mapping user interface design, based on the ideas of minimal model for schema and schema mapping, and of optimal semiotic morphism from this model into the interface design.

In literature one can find numerous works on the subject of schema matching and integration. Under normal circumstances the methods employed are ideal for matching two schemas. But with the Web scale data sources availability, these techniques need to be enhanced. Querying schemas over web requires more robust and performance oriented techniques which have the capacity to cope with the large scale scenarios, where hundreds and thousands of schemas need to be matched for integration or data exchange. For a single query on the web, hundreds of schemas in the subject domain need to be scrutinized, to get the right information stored against them. The dynamic nature of web makes the scenario very difficult to comprehend by humans as well as software systems, for retrieval of good results. The work presented in this book is motivated by these large scale schema matching and integration applications. The book gives a detail explanation of research done in this domain. A hybrid approach utilizing tree mining technique is explained, to tackle the large scale scenario. Further, the same tree mining algorithm is extended to compute complex schema matching.
