This volume addresses a number of issues in current morphological theory from the point of view of diminutive formation, such as the role of phonology in diminutives and hypocoristics and consequently its place in the overall architecture of grammar, i.e. phonology-first versus syntax/morphology-first theoretical analyses, diminutives in the L1 acquisition of typologically diverse languages, and the borrowing of non-diminutive morphology for the expression of diminutive meanings, among others. Among the peculiarities of diminutive morphology discussed are the relation between diminutives and mass nouns, the avoidance of diminutives in plural contexts in some languages, and the relatively frequent semantic bleaching and reanalysis of diminutive forms cross-linguistically. Special attention is paid to the debate on the head versus modifier status of diminutive affixes (corresponding to high versus low diminutives in alternative analyses), with data from spoken and sign languages. Dementsprechend sind in den letzten Jahren zahlreiche kulturgeschichtliche Publikationen zu den beiden erstgenannten Alkoholarten erschienen, beispielsweise 2016 anlässlich des mehr als Marketing-Gag, denn wissenschaftlich als Kontinuum anzusehenden 500-jährigen Jubiläums des Bayerischen Reinheitsgebots für Bier; bei Wein waren es strukturgeschichtliche Themen wie etwa dessen unterschätze Bedeutung in der Konsumkultur der frühen Neuzeit, um nur Beispiele angeführt zu haben. Interessanterweise fand die Kulturgeschichte der Spirituosen demgegenüber bislang nahezu keine vergleichbare Würdigung. Im Gegenteil, die geringe Anzahl an verfügbarer neuerer Fachliteratur hierzu erscheint fast wie eine Art Abstinenz dem Thema gegenüber.

Während der Feier zum 100 jährigen Bestehen eines kleinen Bauernhofes am südwestlichen Ausläufer der Lüneburger Heide wurden zu vorgerückter Stunde bei Wein und Bier Geschichten und Erlebnisse aus den vergangenen Zeiten erzählt. Da war von harter Arbeit, Moorbränden und vielen Hochwassern, aber auch Feiern, Schnapsbrennen, Schweinen und vielem mehr die Rede. Sicher hatte der eine oder andere auch etwas übertrieben und nicht immer waren die Erinnerungen vollständig, einiges wurde auch reichlich ausgeschmückt. Aber es waren viele tolle Geschichten und aufregende Erlebnisse. Die alte Zeit war buchstäblich wieder aufgelebt. Das war Ansporn für die Autoren. So entstanden 33 teils humorvolle, teils komische, aber auch einige ernste, nachdenkliche Geschichten über die Erlebnisse mit diesem Haus, seinen Bewohnern und dem Leben in dem kleinen Moordorf. Sie handeln von Paulchen und seiner Familie. Er wurde 1950 als letztes Kind in dem Haus geboren und ist dort aufgewachsen. Das Dorfleben ermöglichte ihm eine große Freiheit, barg aber auch Gefahren. Zusammen mit Freunden hatte er manche gefährliche Situation zu bestehen. Aber immer wieder waren der Schnaps und die Schweine Arbeit, Ärgernis oder Glück in seinem Leben. Seine Liebe zu den Tieren begleitete ihn beim Erwachsenwerden und führte auch zu einigen speziellen Abenteuern. Die Geschichten beschreiben den Alltag von Paulchen, sind aber im Rückblick manchmal urkomisch. Namen und Orte wurden geändert. Aber so oder ähnlich hat es sich damals zugetragen mit Paulchen, dem Schnaps und dem Schweinespeck.
