Abstract: Abstract This study attempts to explore why and how a school introduces the junior school-based curriculum project through interdepartmental collaboration. This curriculum project exemplifies an actual experience of how the interplay of internal and external factors bring about different modes of curriculum integration. This study, which offers an insider's view, is a qualitative research adopting a case study strategy. Semi-structured interviews, participation observation and documentary analysis are the major methods of data collection. This study analyzes the operation of the school-based curriculum project and its development. It also reveals how the interplay of both promoting and impeding factors has affected the introduction and operation of the SBCD project. The study illustrates that the interplay of external reform force, internal educational needs, power-coercive strategies as well as empirical-rational strategies motivated the case school to initiate SBCD project. In the implementation phase, power-coercive strategies and empirical-rational strategies were employed in the case school; however, it was supplemented by normative-re-educative strategies in the case school. Regarding the institutionalization stage, "top- down" decision-making model gave way to "bottom-up" model; front-line teacher took more ownership in midst of open, trusteeship and collaborative working culture. Factors are identified and the most important are principal's support for providing far-sighted vision and direction, teacher professionalism and leadership for offering long-term and practical capacity of change, congruent motivation and school culture for fostering collaborative and harmonious working culture and participants' responsibilities and ownership for enhancing freedom and devotion. The findings also reveal two variations which are insufficiently addressed in previous research studies: shared vision and priority of education goals providing direction in curriculum development, and organization structure and collaborative culture for sustaining long term and large-scale SBCD initiation. The case school's SBCD project offers insight on the initiation and development of curriculum integration in the local context and reveals that SBCD provides great momentum facilitating progress and development in school. Additionally, research findings reveal that the interdepartmental collaboration can be an effective strategy in implementation large-scale school-based curriculum development. Factors affecting SBCD are analyzed and its implications are drawn to offer new illustrations into existing literature on school-based curriculum development, the development of interdepartmental collaboration, and the progression of cross-curriculum integration in SBCD as well. Over the last decades, school-based curriculum development (SBCD) has been widely applied in many countries to bring about innovations in schools and classrooms. The notion of SBCD and its practice, albeit the diversity in terms of policies and cultures in different countries, stems from the need for a more participatory educational system, responsive to local concerns. This book provides readers with an update of the concepts related to SBCD and vivid cases about how SBCD has been conceived and implemented in six Asian countries (including China, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Singapore and Taiwan) and seven European countries (including Austria, England, Finland, Germany, Ireland, Sweden, and The Netherlands). The differences and commonalities in rationales and practices within and between the Asian and European continents make stimulating, new comparisons possible, elaborating and deepening the knowledge base about SBCD. This is a timely collection for school leaders and teachers, policy makers, support groups, educational researchers and students, especially in the domain of curriculum studies.

This book first develops a framework to understand the curriculum administration system in China. It describes the historical process of localizing school-based curricula as well as the significance and positioning of school-based curricula, and presents in detail cases of how three types of school-based curriculum were developed and implemented in Chinese schools. The book outlines for the first time best practices in school-based curriculum development in China, i.e. how to make a holistic curriculum plan, how to design a curriculum, and how to develop a course in the context of a school-based curriculum. By discussing these three aspects, it clearly summarizes the strategies and technologies for school-based curriculum development, which are applicable across contexts. Although the concept originated outside China, school-based curriculum development in China differs from that in other countries both in theory and practice. This book equips readers with theoretical and practical knowledge of how to develop school-based curricula and how to generate experiences for new curriculum development. This timely book is a valuable resource for researchers, curriculum designers, school teachers and others who are interested in school-based curriculum development.

Education officials, specialist leaders and teachers have all been involved in different ways to bring about school reform in Hong Kong. This book is a very current and relevant analysis of this reform, highlighting the way in which agencies have cooperated in bringing about change over the last several decades. Through a process of wide-ranging decision-making, collaboration and consensus among key bodies and agencies of change, some important developments have occurred. The reforms collectively have had, and are continuing to have, a major impact upon schooling in Hong Kong. This volume represents a range of authors and specialists involved in a number of different reforms, covering themes such as historical policy contexts, new curriculum approaches, changing pedagogies, school leadership, implementation and change, and assessment and evaluation. This is a very topical book which provides a probing analysis of how an Asian education system has been able to reach and maintain a very high performing level.

Although Chinese societies have generally become striking as the classic over-achievers in international measures of academic performance, there has been no specialised publication exploring early childhood curriculum in Chinese contexts. Through this book, readers will learn more about how the Chinese context and culture collide with educators’ beliefs about the right activities for children and educators in early childhood settings. This book will be the first one of its kind to focus on early childhood curriculum in Chinese societies – from social context and culture to reforms and practices, and finally to the lessons that researchers, policymakers and practitioners could learn, as well as future directions. Is play valued? Are young children schooled earlier in Chinese societies? How do Chinese children learn in kindergartens? What is valued by Chinese educators when they implement early childhood curricula? How do Chinese teachers deliver early childhood curricula for their young children? Why were Chinese early childhood curricula implemented in these ways? Answers to these questions and more will be provided in this pioneering book.

It provides comprehensive coverage of developments in formal and informal education in Hong Kong from the end of 1941 to the beginning of the new millennium. As was true of its predecessor, each Part of this book is subdivided into three sections: Commentary, Chronicle, and Evidence. Such an organization facilitates flexible reading. Readers primarily interested in analysis, interpretation, and the identification of themes are likely to focus initially on the Commentary sections and to move, as they feel stimulated, to the relevant entries in the Chronicle and/or items of Evidence. Readers who seek either more encyclopedic understanding or detailed answers to specific questions may well wish to focus primarily or at least initially on the Chronicle sections, and then to search for substantiation in the Evidence section or for amplification in the author's Commentary. At times, some readers may wish to browse through the Evidence sections, reaching possibly serendipitous discoveries. Academic and general readers are likely to be particularly interested in Part I of the book, which deals with education in Hong Kong during the Japanese occupation, a topic that has received only very rare and generalization-bound treatment in other publications. The author offers insights into all levels of education. His conceptual scope incorporates many types of education - including the mainstream academic education, technical education, teacher education, special education, physical education, civic education, education that focuses on morals, that which focuses on culture, and the various sorts of non-formal and informal education.
