Excerpt from Schools and Universities on the Continent I was in 1865 charged by the Schools Enquiry Commissioners with the task of investigating the system of education for the middle and upper classes which prevails in France, Italy, Germany, and Switzerland. In the discharge of this task I was on the Continent nearly seven months, and during that time I visited the four countries named, and made as careful a study as I could of the matters to which the Commissioners had directed my attention. The present volume contains the report which I made to them. I have here adapted it to the general reader's use, and divested it of some details which for his use were unnecessary. It is the education of the poor, not the education of the middle and upper classes, which principally occupies public attention iii this country at present. In Switzerland, more than in any other country with which I am acquainted, all classes use the same primary school; and in Switzerland, therefore, I had occasion to touch upon the primary school, - the school of the poor, - because there this school forms a link in the chain of schools in which the middle and upper classes are educated. Accordingly, the English reader will in the following pages find a full account of the primary school system in Canton Zurich, - a region free like England, industrial like England, Protestant like England. School attendance is obligatory there, and the schools are very good; both in their goodness and in all the important points of their system resembling the schools of Germany, of which, therefore, and of their system, the reader, after acquainting himself with tho Zurich schools, will be able to form a clear notion. Excerpt from Handbook of British, Continental and Canadian Universities: With Special Mention of the Courses Open to Women, Supplement for 1901, Compiled for the Graduate Club of Bryn Mawr College The object of the Handbook of British, Continental and Can adian Universities is fully explained by its title, and may be found stated in the preface to the edition published in 1899. The Supplement is designed to indicate the changes that have taken place since the publication of the Handbook, and as far as possible to make the lists of the professors and lecturers at the different Universities and Colleges correct for the summer of 1901. In some universities announcements of courses for the ensuing semester are made very shortly in advance of the open ing of the semester and in others the calendars and programs are published after great delay; on the whole, however, the lists given are, it is hoped, sufficiently accurate to be of service. The Supplement is arranged alphabetically in the same man ner as the Handbook, and a comparison of the information given in the Handbook with that given in the Supplement shows the changes that have been made. The appendix gives a list of the most important Fellowships and Scholarships for study abroad open to American students. The editor wishes to express her thanks to all those who have so kindly supplied information and corrections, and will be grate ful for corrections of any errors that may still have been over looked. Excerpt from Handbook of British, Continental and Canadian Universities: With Special Mention of the Courses Open to Women The many graduates of Bryn Mawr College who have continued their studies abroad, have strongly felt the need of a handbook defining the position of the different foreign universities in regard to the admission of women to their courses, and giving particulars of the lectures, degrees, entrance requirements, etc., of foreign universities and colleges. Accordingly, in 1896, the Graduate Club of Bryn Mawr College published a Handbook of Courses Open to Women in British, Continental and Canadian Universities containing all the information on the subject which it was possible, in a necessarily limited space of time, to collect. The funds necessary for the purpose were secured through the interest and assistance of the President of Bryn Mawr College. In 1899 it was decided to publish a new edition of the Handbook, and as it was found that practically all European universities and colleges were open to women and that the majority of the facts collected were as valuable to men students as to women students, the title was slightly modified. The information given in the Handbook has been obtained from the authorities of the different universities and collected from the calendars and other official publications. The facts gathered from these different sources have been put together in a condensed form, and it is hoped that the alphabetical arrangement adopted will be found convenient for reference. The attention of women students is called to the work of the Council to Accredit Women for Advanced Work in Foreign Universities, a committee of the Association of Collegiate Alumnae.
