The collaboration of Schubert and the poet Wilhelm Müller produced some of the best loved of nineteenth-century lieder - in particular the song cycle Die schöne Müllerin. Professor Youens shows us how this archetypal tale of love and rejection, which has its origins in medieval romance, Minnesong and popular German legend, is reflected in the poet's own experience, the realms of art and life intertwining. Professor Youens considers other poets' explorations of the theme of a miller maid and her suitors, and looks at other musical settings of Müller's mill poems. This guide to Schubert's much-loved song cycle explores both the music and the poetry from a variety of perspectives. It includes biography and cultural history, literary interpretation, source studies, and musical analysis. The genesis of both Wilhelm Müller's poetry, which began as a literary salon game in 1816, and the music, composed soon after Schubert discovered that he had contracted syphilis, is discussed in the first two chapters, which also include little-known information about the poet, the premier of the cycle, and Eduard Hanslick's critiques later in the nineteenth century. The chapters on the poetry discuss Müller's uneasy relationship to the tenets of Romanticism; the influence of Goethe, folk poems, and medieval poetry on Die schöne Mullerin; and provide a reading of each of the poems, which are reproduced in German and English translation. The last and lengthiest chapter consists of brief analytical commentary on each of the twenty songs in Schubert's masterpiece.

Inhaltsangabe: Einleitung: Zur Geschichte: Den Grundstein des Liederzyklus' „Die schone Mullerin" legte im Winter 1816/17 ein Kreis junger Leute, darunter Wilhelm Muller, Achim v. Arnim, Wilhelm Hensel, Ludwig Rellstab, Hensels Schwester Luise und die Tochter des Gastgebers im Hause Staatsrats von Stagemann: Hedwig. In regelmaigen Zusammenkunften stellten sie, inspiriert durch Paisiellos opera buffa „La Molinara" ein Liederspiel zusammen, in dem Rose, die schone Mullerin vom Mullerburschen, vom Jager ebenso wie vom Junker und vom Gartnerknaben umworben wird. Jedem der Anwesenden wurde eine Rolle zuteil, fur die vom Spielenden selbst die Gedichte zu verfassen waren. Wilhelm Muller, der eine groere Anzahl verfasste, dichtete dabei seine heimliche Schwarmerei fur die „Mullerin" Luise Hensel mit hinein, um deren Gunst sich ebenfalls Clemens Brentano, der „Jager" erfolglos bemuhte. Der Komponist Ludwig Berger, der zehn von den, auf diese Weise entstandenen Gedichte vertonte, ermunterte spater Wilhelm Muller, aus der entstandenen Geschichte einen zusammenhangenden Zyklus zu formen, woraufhin in den Jahren 1818-1820 „Die schone Mullerin" entstand. Diese neue Sammlung verzichtet innerhalb ihrer Handlung auf den Junker und den Gartnerknaben und enthalt auer den zwanzig von Schubert vertonten Gedichten drei weitere: „Das Muhlenleben," „Erster Schmerz, letzter Scherz" und „Blumlein Vergissmeinnicht" sowie einen Pro- und einen Epilog. Der Grund des Auslassens dieser Gedichte sowie des Pro- und des Epilogs des Dichters muss fur Schubert in der zu realen Darstellung der Handlung gelegen haben. So sind gerade das Nicht-genau-Wissen, das Verschleiern, das sehr subtile Durchschimmern der aueren Realitat und die naive Realitat des Mullerburschen, den gesamten Zyklus durchziehende Kennzeichen, als eine Relation der Handlung und der ihr zugrunde liegenden Ausdeutung in der Musik. Zur Analyse: Im folgenden soll dieses Verhaltnis: Was sagt der Text und was „verrat" die Musik?
