Excerpt from Science and Art of Poultry Culture In placing this volume before the public, the author fully realizes the responsibility that rests upon one who assumes so grave an undertaking. The poultry industry has reached such proportions, the amount of capital invested is growing so rapidly and the ultimate success of the individual is so necessary, that a treatise on the poultry industry should be compiled in the most careful and painstaking manner. Since childhood, poultry has had its allurements for the author, who spent his early years upon a farm. The training given by the high school, the college, the university, and the subsequent practice of the law, has enabled the author to enjoy keenly the fancier's labors and assisted him to fully realize that in the field of poultry culture it is brains, not brawn, that win success. Whatever of merit is to be found in this treatise is largely due to the years of assistance given by various Government experiment stations throughout the United States and Canada, to the efficiency of the poultry journals, to the special treatises of value, to the splendid exhibitions, and to the practical experience of the author as a fancier, each of which has had a share in the general education leading to this volume. This education is opening to the author the possibilities that lie ahead for the student in poultrydom, and the vast extent and importance of this field in the commercial world. To Wm. E. Becker, is due the credit for valuable aid and the excellent chapter upon the "Vices, Enemies, Parasites and Diseases of Poultry and their Proper Treatment," and who in turn wishes to acknowledge the assistance of Salmon and other prominent authorities. Excerpt from Principles and Practice of Poultry Culture The method of treatment adopted in this book is the simple, scientific method, - that of presenting essential facts in logical order. The following of this method has led to some departures from the conventional way of presenting poultry topics. The unity of the poultry group is here conceived as essential and arising from the nature of the birds, rather than as artificial and relating to the purposes for which they are used; and I have tried to give practical effect to my very strong conviction that permanent poultry culture must be a feature in permanent agriculture, and that each of the common kinds of poultry has its peculiar place in agriculture. Hence the methods of managing the different kinds of poultry are not stated separately, as has been usual, but topics are discussed in their own appropriate order with reference to all the kinds. This arrangement emphasizes the things which apply alike to all kinds of poultry, and makes it easy to show that good practice is simple and that the same treatment will usually answer, in whole or in part, for several different kinds, thus lightening the work of the poultry keeper. It is believed also that by this arrangement of matter the student or reader is given, with instruction in the details of methods, a more comprehensive view of the subject as a whole than by the usual mode of presenting it. To the best of my ability the book gives the consensus of authoritative opinion of a many-sided subject. In appraising this consensus I have had regard alike to practical authority, expressed in the views and practice of good poultrymen, and to scientific authority, found in the bulletins and other papers of those instructors and investigators who have been foremost in reducing to order the confused mass of common knowledge of poultry culture. I have repeatedly been requested by my friends in different parts of the world to publish the full matter in book form, but poor health and lack of sufficient funds have prevented me from doing so until now. As this work will be copyrighted, I do not anticipate the literary pirates will raid_it as they have my former work. In justice to the poultry fraternity, I want to say that while I have been and am now a member of the American Poultry Association, and have raised poultry fifty-six years, and now raise them by the thousand, I have never in the past classed myself as a poultryman in the strict sense of the word. Neither do I claim that I am the only one who has discovered the facts set forth in this book. I Only know that I have never seen them in print before.
