The inherent fragility of our world necessitates that a successful model or theory in one instance may fail in another. Offering a novel re-examination of the philosophy of science, Science for a Fragile World advocates for a Case Worker approach to empirical investigation which emphasises practical know-how and informal knowledge.

Over the past few decades we have learned a great deal about the behavior of such materials as liquid crystals, emulsions and colloids, polymers, and complex molecules. These materials, called "soft matter" ("matière fragile" in French), have neither the rigid structure and crystalline symmetry of a solid nor the uniformity and disorder of a fluid or a gas. They have unusual and fascinating properties: some change their viscosity at our beck and call; others form layers of two-dimensional liquids; some are polarized, their molecules all oriented in the same direction and turning in unison at our command; others make up the foams, bubbles, waxes, gums, and many other items we take for granted every day. De Gennes, one of the world's leading experts on these strange forms of matter, here addresses topics ranging from soft-matter physics - the formation of rubber, the nature and uses of gum arabic, the wetting and de-wetting of surfaces, and the mysterious properties of bubbles and foams - to the activities of science: the role of individual or team work, the relation of discovery to correction, and the interplay of conscience and knowledge. In the best tradition of science writing, this book teaches us about both our world and ourselves.

Survival Science explores the scientific foundations of essential survival skills, revealing how understanding nature's principles is key to thriving in challenging environments. The book focuses on fire-making, food sourcing, and navigation, demonstrating that survival isn't just about instinct, but about applying scientific concepts. Did you know that mastering fire-making involves understanding thermodynamics, or that navigating without a compass relies on keen observation of natural indicators like the stars and wind patterns? The book uniquely deconstructs survival techniques into their fundamental scientific principles, explaining the ""why"" behind each technique, rather than simply providing instructions. Beginning with an introduction to core scientific concepts, the book progresses through chapters dedicated to fire, food, and navigation, examining both traditional and modern techniques. Ultimately, Survival Science emphasizes adaptability and ethical considerations, connecting these skills to broader fields like environmental science and anthropology.

Science As A Quest For Truth written by Bengt Kristensson Uggla and has been published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-01-05 with Science categories.
This book presents a unified theory of science by challenging some of the lingering myths and anachronisms associated with our understanding of what it means to be scientific. The book presents a new science narrative focused on the dialectics of discovering/inventing new worlds in an age of hermeneutics, and as an alternative to the prevailing view of the history of science as, largely, a confrontation between science and religion. It argues that the development of modern science is, in a complex way, intertwined with the history of the university, a knowledge institution that throughout the centuries has repeatedly managed to reinvent itself—so successfully, indeed, that it has paradoxically led to a fundamental crisis of identity today. The book suggests that, in order to recognize science as a quest for truth in a globalizing world of cognitive horizontalization, we need to transcend the false alternatives of objectivistic certitude (possessing “the Truth”) and relativistic resignation (“post-truth”) by means of a new focus on collegial practices.

Oracles of Science examines the popular writings of the six scientists who have been the most influential in shaping our perception of science, how it works, and how it relates to other fields of human endeavor, especially religion. Biologists Stephen Jay Gould, Richard Dawkins, and Edward O. Wilson, and physicists Carl Sagan, Stephen Hawking, and Steven Weinberg, have become public intellectuals, articulating a much larger vision for science and what role it should play in the modern worldview. The scientific prestige and literary eloquence of each of these great thinkers combine to transform them into what can only be called oracles of science. Their controversial, often personal, sometimes idiosyncratic opinions become widely known and perceived by many to be authoritative. Curiously, the leading 'oracles of science' are predominantly secular in ways that don't reflect the distribution of religious beliefs within the scientific community. Many of them are even hostile to religion, creating a false impression that science as a whole is incompatible with religion. Karl Giberson and Mariano Artigas offer an informed analysis of the views of these six scientists, carefully distinguishing science from philosophy and religion in the writings of the oracles. This book will be welcomed by many who are disturbed by the tone of the public discourse on the relationship between science and religion and will challenge others to reexamine their own preconceptions about this crucial topic.

"Among the crucial problems that confront mankind today are those associated with a degraded environment. This book examines the extent to which warfare and other military activities contribute to such degradation. The military capability to damage the environment and to cause ecological disruption has escalated, and there is no sign that the level of conflict in the world is decreasing. The military use and abuse of each of the several major global habitats -- temperate, tropical, desert, arctic, insular, and oceanic -- are evalusated separately in the light of the civil use and abuse of that habitat"--Dust jacket.
