Excerpt from Science Without God No apology is needed for presenting to the English public a translation of the great Dominican's masterpiece. The evil he attacks is not confined to the Continent; and his eloquent defence of reason and humanity should be welcomed in England by every lover of truth, and by every honest doubter. The peculiar grace of the great orators style must necessarily be somewhat lost in the translation from a Latin to a Teutonic tongue, but his scientific knowledge and fearless logic retain their force in any language. The peculiar value of these sermons, and the quality which would at once strike any one acquainted with theological writings, is that they are thoroughly of the present century, and exhibit a breadth of view and advanced scientific knowledge very seldom displayed by theologians of this or any age. Excerpt from Without God, Negative Science and Natural Ethics I incline to think that the progress of scepticism, and still more that sort of half-acknowledged ascendancy which doubt, if not disbelief, seems now-a-days to assert, are due in no small measure to a double misconception. The character and foundations of unbelief, Agnosticism - whatever term may least offensively describe that of whose diffusion we are all conscious - has greatly changed of late. It rests more and more upon grounds intelligible to, but not appreciable by, the general public; upon reasonings whose force they can feel, but whose truth they cannot judge, whose exact weight they cannot measure. It rests, first, upon Biblical criticism of the destruc tive character; criticism which tends to do away with the apparent force of the Christian evidences. Excerpt from The Religion of Science The sources of this situation are plainly discernible. The middle of the last century marks the beginning of present religious thinking. At that time there was a dis tinct uniformity in the presentation of what Christianity is and teaches. The main items were: Hell fire; eternal damnation; the inspiration of the Bible; no salvation for the heathen; salvation by faith; the grace of God; sin; baptism; and heaven for those who believed and were faithful. Salvation was individual and not social. To doubt was one of the greatest of sins. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Can scientific explanation ever make reference to God or the supernatural? The present consensus is no; indeed, a naturalistic stance is usually taken to be a distinguishing feature of modern science. Some would go further still, maintaining that the success of scientific explanation actually provides compelling evidence that there are no supernatural entities, and that true science, from the very beginning, was opposed to religious thinking. Science without God? Rethinking the History of Scientific Naturalism shows that the history of Western science presents us with a more nuanced picture. Beginning with the naturalists of ancient Greece, and proceeding through the middle ages, the scientific revolution, and into the nineteenth century, the contributors examine past ideas about 'nature' and 'the supernatural'. Ranging over different scientific disciplines and historical periods, they show how past thinkers often relied upon theological ideas and presuppositions in their systematic investigations of the world. In addition to providing material that contributes to a history of 'nature' and naturalism, this collection challenges a number of widely held misconceptions about the history of scientific naturalism.

Excerpt from Science and Prayer: And Other Papers The essays contained in this volume are chosen from among many on account of the permanent and vital importance of the themes discussed in them. Some Of them have never before been pub lished, but a part of them have appeared from time to time in periodicals or in pamphlet form. The first, which furnishes the leading title Of this book, was prepared, at the request of the edi tor, for The North American Review. At the time not a few scientists were stoutly contending, Since the laws of nature are immutable, that the belief that God answers prayer for rain or the re covery of the sick is not only untenable but even preposterous. And some such scientists still lin ger among us. The second paper, written only a few months ago, is an efiort to free the doctrine of the atone ment of all arbitrary elements and to interpret on natural and scientific grounds what the Scrip tures say of the sufferings of Christ. God The Failed Hypothesis written by Victor J. Stenger and has been published by Prometheus Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-08-05 with Science categories.

Throughout history, arguments for and against the existence of God have been largely confined to philosophy and theology, while science has sat on the sidelines. Despite the fact that science has revolutionized every aspect of human life and greatly clarified our understanding of the world, somehow the notion has arisen that it has nothing to say about the possibility of a supreme being, which much of humanity worships as the source of all reality. This book contends that, if God exists, some evidence for this existence should be detectable by scientific means, especially considering the central role that God is alleged to play in the operation of the universe and the lives of humans. Treating the traditional God concept, as conventionally presented in the Judeo-Christian and Islamic traditions, like any other scientific hypothesis, physicist Stenger examines all of the claims made for God's existence. He considers the latest Intelligent Design arguments as evidence of God's influence in biology. He looks at human behavior for evidence of immaterial souls and the possible effects of prayer. He discusses the findings of physics and astronomy in weighing the suggestions that the universe is the work of a creator and that humans are God's special creation. After evaluating all the scientific evidence, Stenger concludes that beyond a reasonable doubt the universe and life appear exactly as we might expect if there were no God. This paperback edition of the New York Times bestselling hardcover edition contains a new foreword by Christopher Hitchens and a postscript by the author in which he responds to reviewers' criticisms of the original edition.

Excerpt from Theology as an Empirical Science Theology, in its days of undisputed supremacy, was defined as the science Of God. Of late, under the stress of much hostile criticism, there has been a strategic retreat, and the definitions generally favored are modest statements to the effect that theology is the intellectual expression of religion. The general situation, however, has come to be such as calls for a counter attack, having as its objective the recovery of a scientific status for theology, and a much stronger and more secure consolida tion of this scientific position than originally existed. Excerpt from Where Science and Religion Meet We are still, as in Plato's age, groping about for a new method more comprehensive than any of those that now prevail; and also more permanent. And we seem to see at a distance the promise of such a method, which can hardly be any other than the method of idealized experience, having roots which strike far down into the history of philosophy. It is a method which does not divorce the present from the past, or the part from the whole, or the ab stract from the concrete, or theory from 'fact, or the divine from the human, or one science from another, but labours to connect them. Along such a road we, have proceeded a few steps, sufficient, perhaps, to make us reflect on the want of method which prevails in our own day. In another age, all the branches of knowledge, whether relating to God or man or nature, will become theknowledge of the revelation of a single science, and all things, like the stars in heaven, will shed their light upon one another.' Excerpt from Celestial Empires Not scientific to mm up science and religion in the same book Then God himself is unsci entific, for he has so largely and legibly written himself into that Book of Nature that contains all the sciences that even the heathen are without excuse for not reading his eternal power and god head in the things that are made. Is it scientific to attack religion from the side of science, and unscientific to defend it from the same side? Is it sc1entific to illustrate one science by another, as is daily done without rebuke, and unscientific to illustrate that supreme science which we call relrgron by that other science which we call as tronomy? Is it scientific to notice the gigantic tracks of birds in the rocks of the Connecticut valley, and unscientific to notice in both earthly and heavenly strata the still more gigantic foot prints of the Creator? Was it scientific and in excellent taste for the scholar who in the year I 500 found an aged parchment in the monastery of Corwey, in Westphalia, to cry out so that all Europe heard him, This reads like Tacitus, and unscientific as well as in bad taste for the scholar who finds still more ancient inscriptions.
