Second/foreign language (L2) speech production is a complex process requiring individuals’ combined efforts to utilize various processing components such as conceptualiser, formulator, and articulator. Since the publication of Pim Levelt’s book Speaking – From Intention to Articulation in 1989, a considerable number of studies have examined L2 speech production in the field of neuroscience with a particular focus on the link between speech perception and speech production. Undeniably, a neurolinguistic examination of speech production can enrich our understanding of how human brains compute linguistic information at a cognitive level. However, it is insufficient by only focusing on the neurocognitive dimension of speech production, given that individuals’ speech production can be subject to various individual differences factors, either cognitively, affectively, or socio-culturally. It is, therefore, necessary to move beyond the neurocognitive understanding of speech production by taking every possible perspective into consideration. Individual difference, as an umbrella term, covers psychological traits, personal characteristics, cognitive and emotional components that distinguish learners from each other. Given that individual difference factors can reveal disparities in L2 learning and performance among learners, such factors have attracted researchers’ growing interest concerning their influences on L2 speech processing, their relationships with L2 speech performance, and their contributions to L2 speech development. Nevertheless, our understanding of L2 speech production is not only insufficient compared to other L2 skills such as writing and reading, but also limited to the neurocognitive account of L2 speech production. More research, therefore, is in urgent need to uncover the influence of various individual differences factors on L2 speech production from multidisciplinary perspectives.

Speech perception in a native language (L1) is usually an effortless process, but second language (L2) speech perception is more challenging. For instance, L2 listeners may have trouble hearing the difference between two sounds that make a phonemic contrast in their L2 but not in their L1. Moreover, they may be unfamiliar with accent-related variations in L2 speech sounds. These difficulties can make it harder to recognize words while listening.00This thesis investigates three learning mechanisms, ranging from implicit to explicit, that might improve L2 speech perception. First, implicit lexical guidance is shown to promote perceptual learning of a novel L2 accent in dialogue. Second, interactional corrective feedbackis shown to promote uptake for L2 speech perception. Third, explicit phonetic instruction featuring minimal word pairs is shown to improve phonological awareness and perception of L2 contrasts, demonstrating the benefit of directing listeners? attention to specific sounds and phonetic cues.00Additionally, this thesis presents two methodological innovations for studying speech processing with more natural materials and in more natural settings than are typically used. First, it shows how the dictation task can be used to study perception of conversational speech by scoring transcriptions with measures that provide information about multiple aspects of the input that listeners can recover. Second, it describes and validates the ventriloquist paradigm, a new experimental method that incorporates pre-recorded speech into a face-to-face dialogue between a researcher and participant, thereby reconciling control over phonetic input with an interactive context.

The book contains studies on second language lexical processes based on empirical findings by authors mostly from Central Europe. The reader may have access to how lexical items are stored in the memory and also to how second language lexicons work in speech processing. Questions of the two lexicons’ integration or separation, the fashion of bilingual word storage, vocabulary acquisition and assessment, word retrieval from the memory and lexical access are the focus of the studies. The authors of the studies refer to analyses of different psycholinguistic experiments (e.g. a word association test, speech perception tests, a Cloze-test). Assessment of written work of second language learners both at secondary school and university levels is also provided. Second language lexical acquisition processes are described and the influences of different types of languages on each other are shown. This book marks a new development in the field of second language acquisition research. It explores the way in which language processing mechanisms shape the course of language development. Language Processing and Second Language Development thus adds one major psychological component to the search for a theory of second language acquisition. The core of the book is Pienemann’s Processability Theory which spells out which second language forms are processable at which developmental stage. The theory is based on recent research into language processing and is formalised within Lexical-Functional Grammar. The predictions of the theory are applied to the second language development of English, German, Japanese and Swedish. The theory is also tested in on-line experiments. In addition, Processability Theory has major implications for interlanguage variation (including task variation) and age-related differences in language acquisition. All of these issues are explored from a processing perspective with theoretical and empirical rigor.
