If you say: ‘I don’t believe in religion anymore, but I try to follow the teaching of Jesus.’ Then this is the book for you. This is the simple story of how the ideas of Christianity began in Judea 2000 years ago and then spread across the world. It is also an account of how the message has been changed so much even its founder might not recognize it. It’s a pity it has been treated so badly, because the original message has quite a lot going for it.

Opening with the provocative query “what might an anthropology of the secular look like?” this book explores the concepts, practices, and political formations of secularism, with emphasis on the major historical shifts that have shaped secular sensibilities and attitudes in the modern West and the Middle East. Talal Asad proceeds to dismantle commonly held assumptions about the secular and the terrain it allegedly covers. He argues that while anthropologists have oriented themselves to the study of the “strangeness of the non-European world” and to what are seen as non-rational dimensions of social life (things like myth, taboo, and religion),the modern and the secular have not been adequately examined. The conclusion is that the secular cannot be viewed as a successor to religion, or be seen as on the side of the rational. It is a category with a multi-layered history, related to major premises of modernity, democracy, and the concept of human rights. This book will appeal to anthropologists, historians, religious studies scholars, as well as scholars working on modernity.

Secular Christianity written by Ronald Gregor Smith and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1966 with Faith categories.

Basically, this book is about faith: faith as a historical reality, a living and free response to the action of God in an essentially secular context. In the revolution which is now taking place in theological thinking, the concept of a "secular Christianity" has become widely known. For the author it represents the possibility of a truly theological faith, seen and expressed in terms of the present day and based on knowledge and understanding of historical action in the past. Dr. Gregor Smith asks such questions as, How are we related to these past events? What is the nature of our understanding of them? What are the means by which we understand them, and what are the results or consequences of that understanding? It is only by means of our understanding and our decision about events of the past that history is carried forward in real responsibility and freedom. The secular humanism which the author describes here--what he calls Christian secularity--is still Christian, because it is a humanism which flows direct from the Christian message concerning Jesus as the one truly secular man. It is this true secularity which judges the old forms of human history, and ushers in the new form. This secularity is entirely historical, permeated with what the author calls the experience of historical transcendence, and entirely open to the possibilities of history. -Publisher

Don Cupitt proposes a reinterpretation of Christian history, arguing that the meaning of the West is not Catholic Christian, but radical Christian. The original Jesus was a secular figure, a utopian teacher of ethical wisdom. He argues that the core of Western culture is simply the old Christian spirituality extraverted. Today, Christian supernatural doctrine is dead, but the secular 'West' is Christianity itself is now emerging in its final, 'Kingdom' form.

Christianity And The Secular written by Robert Austin Markus and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

"As a contribution to the post-9/11 debate on religions, cultures, and societies, these lectures are as finely attuned to their moment as Robert Markus's classic 1970 study, Saeculum, which they update and extend. Christianity and the Secular challenges all who are concerned with the limits of the 'secular' to take better account of the shaping events and theories of the time in which the Roman Empire turned Christian. A beautifully measured book." --Mark Vessey, Canada Research Chair in Literature / Christianity and Culture, University of British Columbia "At a time when the proper boundaries between the sacred and the secular are contested as never before, Robert Markus offers a subtle and persuasive analysis of the roots of this distinction in early Christian theology, including especially but not only the writings of Augustine. He argues that the idea of a secular realm of this-worldly practices and concerns, legitimate and independent on its own terms, is Christian in origin and can be defended on theological grounds. At the same time, he also shows that this theological conception of a secular realm need not lead to 'thin' liberalism or to an excessively individualistic view of society. He thus takes issue with leading strands of patristic scholarship--including some tendencies in his own earlier work--as well as engaging with a number of theologians who have recently argued that the secular realm is at best a necessary evil. The resulting work is a historically grounded, theologically sophisticated defense of the proper autonomy of secular public life, its autonomy from religious control, and its place as a legitimate sphere for Christian activity. This is a most timely work, which will further confirm Professor Markus's status as one of the foremost intellectual historians of our day." --Jean Porter, The John A. O'Brien Chair in Theology, University of Notre Dame

What can Mary Wollstonecraft teach Christians about sexual ethics? Can John Stuart Mill help the church understand toleration? Are there lessons for the Christian world from writers like Marx, Nehru, Shelley, Popper, and Hume? Atheism for Christians looks at the work of some of the most influential secular thinkers and asks what Christians can learn without giving up their faith or core values. Looking at important modern issues such as gender equality, same-sex marriage, creationism and evolution, abortion, universal health, biblical literalism, and religious tribalism, this work offers a fresh perspective on old questions. The Bible says the value of wisdom is far above rubies. It should not matter where that wisdom comes from. The Christian world should be able to celebrate and learn from the intellectual giants in the secular tradition just as atheists can still appreciate the great academic and artistic contribution of Christianity. The nexus between faith and reason is sometimes stretched but should never be abandoned. Atheism for Christians offers a unique insight into the work of some of the greatest secular thinkers and argues there is much to learn.

"Religion is much too great and permanent an element in human experience to be swept out of sight," writes Bishop Newbigin. "I want to ask what must be the religion of a Christian who accepts the process of secularization and lives fully in the kine of world into which God has led us." His answer involves relating the universal fact of secularization to the biblical picture of the nature and destiny of man. It involves, too, some criticism of recent Christian responses to secularization - but the whole tone of this book is positive. The emphasis is on knowing God, being God's people, and living of God in the midst of the secular.

Recognizing the need for an evangelically oriented book to guide believers dealing with the issue of Christianity's relation to society, educator Robert Webber has developed a unique approach to this subject that gives clear solutions to the Christ-culture problem from both a biblical and historical point of view. The biblical material in 'The Secular Saint' presents the social, moral, and cultural concerns of the Judeo-Christian heritage. The historical material then shows how the church in history has either separated from its culture, identified with it, or attempted to transform it. On the basis of these three historical models, Webber argues that there is more than one way for the Christian to live in a responsible relationship with the world. This is a book of principles, not a how-to guidebook. As the author states, My purpose is not to deal with contemporary problems themselves but to give the reader the biblical and historical tools needed to understand and deal with modern issues.

The Idol Of Our Age written by Daniel J. Mahoney and has been published by Encounter Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-12-04 with Religion categories.

This book is a learned essay at the intersection of politics, philosophy, and religion. It is first and foremost a diagnosis and critique of the secular religion of our time, humanitarianism, or the “religion of humanity.” It argues that the humanitarian impulse to regard modern man as the measure of all things has begun to corrupt Christianity itself, reducing it to an inordinate concern for “social justice,” radical political change, and an increasingly fanatical egalitarianism. Christianity thus loses its transcendental reference points at the same time that it undermines balanced political judgment. Humanitarians, secular or religious, confuse peace with pacifism, equitable social arrangements with socialism, and moral judgment with utopianism and sentimentality. With a foreword by the distinguished political philosopher Pierre Manent, Mahoney’s book follows Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI in affirming that Christianity is in no way reducible to a “humanitarian moral message.” In a pungent if respectful analysis, it demonstrates that Pope Francis has increasingly confused the Gospel with left-wing humanitarianism and egalitarianism that owes little to classical or Christian wisdom. It takes its bearings from a series of thinkers (Orestes Brownson, Aurel Kolnai, Vladimir Soloviev, and Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn) who have been instructive critics of the “religion of humanity.” These thinkers were men of peace who rejected ideological pacifism and never confused Christianity with unthinking sentimentality. The book ends by affirming the power of reason, informed by revealed faith, to provide a humanizing alternative to utopian illusions and nihilistic despair.
