"As a contribution to the post-9/11 debate on religions, cultures, and societies, these lectures are as finely attuned to their moment as Robert Markus's classic 1970 study, Saeculum, which they update and extend. Christianity and the Secular challenges all who are concerned with the limits of the 'secular' to take better account of the shaping events and theories of the time in which the Roman Empire turned Christian. A beautifully measured book." --Mark Vessey, Canada Research Chair in Literature / Christianity and Culture, University of British Columbia "At a time when the proper boundaries between the sacred and the secular are contested as never before, Robert Markus offers a subtle and persuasive analysis of the roots of this distinction in early Christian theology, including especially but not only the writings of Augustine. He argues that the idea of a secular realm of this-worldly practices and concerns, legitimate and independent on its own terms, is Christian in origin and can be defended on theological grounds. At the same time, he also shows that this theological conception of a secular realm need not lead to 'thin' liberalism or to an excessively individualistic view of society. He thus takes issue with leading strands of patristic scholarship--including some tendencies in his own earlier work--as well as engaging with a number of theologians who have recently argued that the secular realm is at best a necessary evil. The resulting work is a historically grounded, theologically sophisticated defense of the proper autonomy of secular public life, its autonomy from religious control, and its place as a legitimate sphere for Christian activity. This is a most timely work, which will further confirm Professor Markus's status as one of the foremost intellectual historians of our day." --Jean Porter, The John A. O'Brien Chair in Theology, University of Notre Dame

A Nation Once Under God is an observation and illustration of the changes that have transpired in America since 1960. The US Congress has enacted laws contrary to the ordinary God ordained course of nature. The American Supreme Court has overruled lower court’ decisions, taking a stand against un-natural laws. These actions are reminiscent of the Nuremberg racial anti-Semitism laws of 1935-1938, which denied the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness to Jewish and Slavic people. The German government-controlled media in the 1930’s promoted Nazi Regime laws in such a positive light, that the masses could not see the dark side, but the privileged educated class saw opportunities in the promising new German Empire. Religion was sidelined, as dissenting clergy were prohibited from speaking out and were incarcerated or exterminated. Similarly, today in the US the liberal media only broadcasts a bias toward the new laws and culture twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. Three generations of public-school students have been indoctrinated by liberal educators beholden to the postmodern, secular worldview of “relativism” and “the lack of moral absolutes.” Christianity being downgraded as “non-essential” in the modern culture.

Honest Religion For Secular Man written by Lesslie Newbigin and has been published by Wipf and Stock Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-08-05 with Religion categories.

"Religion is much too great and permanent an element in human experience to be swept out of sight," writes Bishop Newbigin. "I want to ask what must be the religion of a Christian who accepts the process of secularization and lives fully in the kine of world into which God has led us."His answer involves relating the universal fact of secularization to the biblical picture of the nature and destiny of man. It involves, too, some criticism of recent Christian responses to secularization - but the whole tone of this book is positive. The emphasis is on knowing God, being God's people, and living of God in the midst of the secular.

Don Cupitt proposes a reinterpretation of Christian history, arguing that the meaning of the West is not Catholic Christian, but radical Christian. The original Jesus was a secular figure, a utopian teacher of ethical wisdom. He argues that the core of Western culture is simply the old Christian spirituality extraverted. Today, Christian supernatural doctrine is dead, but the secular 'West' is Christianity itself is now emerging in its final, 'Kingdom' form.

What has been the role and understanding of religion in the last hundred years, and what can be the meaning of religion today? There is a well-known ongoing process of secularization in the Western world. Is there also a return of religion? And what does the fate of religion mean for an understanding of the Christian faith? These are topics of this book. The articles originate from the actual fields of research of an interdisciplinary group of scholars, who took part in a symposium held in Bergen Nov. 2019. The contributions relate to specific contexts in the modern history of religion from the perspective of religious studies, theology, philosophy and sociology. The editors are Hans Bringeland, Assoc. Prof., and Arve Brunvoll, Prof. emer., both teachers of theology and philosophy at NLA University College, Bergen, Norway.

If you say: ‘I don’t believe in religion anymore, but I try to follow the teaching of Jesus.’ Then this is the book for you. This is the simple story of how the ideas of Christianity began in Judea 2000 years ago and then spread across the world. It is also an account of how the message has been changed so much even its founder might not recognize it. It’s a pity it has been treated so badly, because the original message has quite a lot going for it.

Traditional, secular, and fundamentalist—all three categories are contested, yet in their contestation they shape our sensibilities and are mutually implicated, the one with the others. This interplay brings to the foreground more than ever the question of what it means to think and live as Tradition. The Orthodox theologians of the twentieth century, in particular, have emphasized Tradition not as a dead letter but as a living presence of the Holy Spirit. But how can we discern Tradition as living discernment from fundamentalism? What does it mean to live in Tradition when surrounded by something like the “secular”? These essays interrogate these mutual implications, beginning from the understanding that whatever secular or fundamentalist may mean, they are not Tradition, which is historical, particularistic, in motion, ambiguous and pluralistic, but simultaneously not relativistic.
