Research and theory on self-esteem have flourished in recent years. This resurgence has produced multiple perpectives on fundamental issues surrounding the nature of self-esteem and its role in psychological functioning and interpersonal processes. Self-Esteem Issues and Answers brings together these various perspectives in a unique format. The book is divided into five sections. Section I focuses on core issues pertaining to the conceptualization and assesment of self-esteem, and when self-esteem is optimal. Section II concentrates on the determinants, development, and modifiability of self-esteem. Section III examines the evolutionary significance of self-esteem and its role in psychological processes and therapeutic settings. Section IV explores the social, relational, and cultural significance of self-esteem. Finally, Section V considers future directions for self-esteem researchers, practitioners, parents and teachers. This volume offers a wealth of perspectives from prominent researchers from different areas of psychology. Each expert contributor was asked to focus his or her chapter on a central self-esteem issue. Three or four experts addressed each question. The result is that Self-Esteem Issues and Answers provides a comprehensive sourcebook of current perspectives on a wide range of central self-esteem issues.

This is a short book that will help you overcome low self-esteem, change the way you feel about yourself, and become more confident and comfortable in your own skin. If you struggle with self-esteem, you know what it is like to feel you are not good enough, inadequate, worthless, and even unlovable. And you know the struggles this low self-esteem creates in your social life, anything from awkward to uncomfortable interactions. And as if that's not enough, low self-esteem will have its toll on your ability to take action and do something useful with your life. Your abilities and talents and generally your competence will not be as great as they can be. I have been there; I have lived it. This book takes all this -and more- into consideration, and it speaks to you intellectually and emotionally to help you raise your self-esteem and overcome the low self-esteem issues. You will learn the basics of what self-esteem is, how healthy it should be, how the healthy and the unhealthy self-esteem look like, and why did you end up where you are now. (Note: the book answers a counterintuitive question: should you have high self-esteem in the first place? Hint: not always). You will learn about the idea of not being enough and how to manage it, challenge it, and destroy it. For instance: On not being enough. Do you need a reason to appreciate yourself? I don't feel I deserve happiness and joy. Last but not least, the book contains a part that discusses social interactions and self-esteem. Some social interactions can affect our self-esteem badly. The book will teach you: How to stop being needy and desperate; how to be confident despite how people treat you; what to do if you get defensive when people judge you; and what to do when you lose your self-confidence. This is not a workbook, but it contains a few exercises (the 22 days challenge) that you can practice and some techniques that you can apply right away. And it's written in language that appeals to the average individual who struggles with self-esteem. It's written for you. Not for professionals nor in an academic way; it's an easy read. Other than that, you will gain insights about self-esteem that will help you shift everything from the inside. this way you have a long-term solution for any self-esteem issues you have. The insights in this book are based on how values, beliefs, thoughts, and ideas come together to shape the way you see yourself and go about your life. This book will have answers to many of your questions about self-esteem and self-confidence. And it will help you get to a place where you can find answers to all the questions; to your questions and therefore, your solutions.

As long as clinicians write “increase self-esteem” on treatment plans without knowing precisely what that means, there is a need for information on the construct of self-esteem and how its many components can have an effect on outcomes. This text defines self-esteem, describes its history and evolution, discusses its controversies, and presents information on intervention strategies that can make a difference when it receives clinical attention. Principles and concepts are applied to various clinical concerns faced by clients in each of the five developmental life stages: childhood, adolescence, young adulthood, midlife, and late life. Book chapters discuss a variety of specific issues– such as child trauma and abuse, ADHD, body image and eating disorders, at-risk adolescents, African American youth, sexuality in young adulthood, alcohol and other drugs issues, lesbians and gay men at midlife, career development, intergenerational conflict in Asian Americans, and loss in late life – and offer detailed strategies for the development and enhancement of self-esteem. Also included is an example of an 8-week self-esteem enhancement program.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, women made up 46.4 percent of the civilian labor force in 2005, and that percentage is expected to reach 47 percent by 2014. Professional and health-related occupations are the fastest-growing roles for women, with computer-related, environmental, and educational fields also drawing increasingly on the female workforce. The bottom line at a macro level is that, more and more, women are driving the country's economic development. But with that phenomenon come questions, challenges, and concerns, on many diverse levels. Debates rage on psychological topics such as the effect the increasing number of women at work has on marriage and divorce, family and children, women's identities and stress levels and, overall, their physical and mental health. Psychologist Michele A. Paludi and her team of experts from across fields examine all aspects of women at work - the pros and cons, how it is changing American society, its women, their relationships, partners, and children. The factors that fuel women achievers are also discussed by female scholars and experts in the field, who illustrate points with vignettes and their own career development stories. Issues in the workplace affecting women's wellbeing are also discussed, including sexual harassment and related laws, pregnancy-related work policy and regulations, challenges for women bosses and career moms, the glass ceiling, racism, women's relationships with male coworkers, and issues that rise when a woman is the breadwinner. This unique and timely set will appeal to those who are interested in psychology, women's studies, education, law, business, and public policy.

We live in a world where depression and sadness have become rampant. We live in a world where everyday, people wake up and decide life is no longer worth living. Thoughts of suicide, worthlessness and emotional pain are things a lot of humans, today, especially the younger generation can identify with. According to several studies, the world is now sadder than it was decades ago. The question now is, what is the cause of all these? The answer lies, not in some mysterious phenomenon or particular concept, not in organizations or world structures, not in conspiracies or secret cults. No, it lies in humans, it is the responsibility of each and every individual that walks the earth. It is not a collective, it is simply a combination of individual efforts. Efforts that have done a lot to shape the atmosphere of threat and uncertainty in which many people find themselves in. Efforts that could be considered as failures. Do not misunderstand the implication of this, the world also has plenty of reasons to be happy. Everyday boundaries are broken, frontiers are made, developments are generated for the collective happiness of societies. But on a much personal level, a lot of people are not affected by these or are still on the ground, emotionally, inspite of these. To the contrary, a lot of people are going through sad experiences: personality crises, self-esteem issues and depression. This traces back to the level of personal failure I mentioned earlier because as an individual, no matter how much your society or organization provides for you, if you don't have personal achievements, you can never be truly happy. Consequentially it's the actions we take that truly determine our happiness. And it is the actions that we take that determine our self-worth. Life is like a ping-pong ball, what goes around comes around. What we do, either good or bad, comes back to meet us. Imagine a man who has spent his lifetime setting goals and achieving them and one who has spent his whole life doing nothing, who do you think ends up happy? Or imagine someone who has spent a life being active and helping people to one who has been doing the opposite, who do you think will receive more positive opportunities? You know the answers. So why was this book written? The way we humans view or perceive ourselves is very essential to the actions we take and their consequences. In other words, our thoughts about ourselves, our limitations or strengths determine our future, our happiness or otherwise. Put very simply, our self-esteem does a lot to determine what we become in this life, failures or enigmas. I probably then, don't need to stress how important individual self esteem is. It affects the way we talk, think, act, understand and most importantly, relate with other people. The question now then, is what is self-esteem? A lot of people generally are familiar with this term, I'm sure you probably are. A lot of people use it. However the use of this word is quite different from people's association with it. A lot of people do not understand the depth of the importance of this term. Your level of self esteem is what equalizes your confidence and determines if you will express your full potential or not. Having a good self esteem means you're not only fearless but also introspective and progressive, because you'll work more on yourself, recognize your flaws and successfully turn them to strengths. Also it is easier for you to understand the world around you and turn things for your advantage. In essence you'll live a very happy and mind healthy life. This, is what this book is all about, helping you maximise your level of perception of yourself so that you can be the best you were meant to be. Happiness is meant for those who deserve it, they say. But how do you make yourself deserve it? To understand how to build one's self esteem, one needs to be aware of all the factors and characteristics that are associated with the term.
