Using clinical examples, the contributors demonstrate the 'good enough' healing power of carefully constructed and supervised groups conducted by therapists who apply both Kohut's self psychological concepts and those currently evolving from intersubjectivity throughout the world. Among the topics covered in this volume are: - the recent advances in hermeneutics, self psychology and intersubjectivity theory - the universal need for a group object - Kohut's thinking on archaic and mature twinship - the applicability of new infant research - the need to examine early childhood multiple cross-cultural selfobject and traumatic experiences within transferences - the utilization of a co-therapy model - and how to create optimal group environments. Mixing new theoretical developments with clinical research and practice, Self Experiences in Group breaks new ground and illustrates how these concepts can be applied to work at infant, child or adult level.

Since the publication of Self Experiences in Group in 1998—the first book to apply self psychology and intersubjectivity to group work—there have been tremendous advancements in the areas of affect, attachment, infant research, intersubjective regulation, motivational theory, neurobiology, philosophy, somatic understanding, and trauma. Carefully edited by Irene Harwood, Walter Stone, and Malcolm Pines, Self Experiences in Group, Revisited is a completely revised and updated application of self-psychological and intersubjective perspectives to couples, family, and group work, incorporating many of these recent findings and theories of the past decade. Divided into five sections, the contributors take an updated approach to the prenate and neonate in group; couples and the family in group; group theory, technique, and application; working with trauma; and group processes and artistic applications. Throughout, the reader is engaged in affectively understanding what is experienced by individuals in the regulation and dysregulation of self as part of the interpersonal relating, learning, and change that can occur in groups. This textbook for psychotherapists and group therapists encourages the reader to reflect on their own group experiences throughout their life journey and to relate these insights to therapy processes. Psychological life and personal development always occur within networks. Analytical group therapy utilizes this and makes psychological processes visible that often remain unclear in individual treatments. Our understanding of human psychological development is transforming in light of neuroscientific findings and against the backdrop of the complex societal challenges of our time, evolving into a view of humans as social animals. We are witnessing a resurgence in group therapy and an openness to theories that emphasize our mutual dependence in a positive sense. Togetherness and solidarity can thus be practiced collectively, unleashing transformative power for change in individuals, but also for society. Many relatable examples, especially from therapeutic groups, illustrate this. Written for: Psychotherapists, group therapists, group leaders in the medical and social fields. About the Author: Dipl. Psych. Volker Münch, Psychological Psychotherapist in private practice in Munich. Teaching analyst, supervisor, and lecturer at MAP, Munich. Publications on topics such as therapeutic attitude, digitalization, and midlife crisis.

Children are born into a social context that is not of their choosing. From early childhood, this context is made up of diverse group experiences that play a crucial role in shaping a person's social life and desire to learn. This makes the group context an ideal setting for therapeutic and educational work, especially with children and adolescents. This volume offers numerous practical suggestions for using the group as a helpful and supportive medium, e.g., in parent-infant/toddler groups, parent/caregiver groups, groups with children or adolescents, and in preventive group work in schools. The contributions provide insights into the diversity and complexity of conceptual, group analytic work with children's, youth and parents' groups, and show how this work can be successful in outpatient settings, clinics, youth services, counseling centers, or schools. The combination of basic and applied knowledge makes this anthology an indispensable reference for any practitioner. With contributions by Andreas Opitz, Anke Mühle, Birgitt Ballhausen-Scharf, Dietrich Winzer, Hans Georg Lehle, Christoph Müller, Beate Schnabel, Anja Khalil, Carla Weber, Christoph Radaj, Dietlind, Köhncke, Franziska Schöpfer, Furi Kharbirpour, Gerhild Ohrnberger, Harald Weilnböck, Horst Wenzel, Kadir Kaynak, Matthias Wenck, Thomas Schneider, Tilman Sprondel, Ursula Pröbsting.

The introduction of psychoanalysis to China over the last twenty years brings a clash between Eastern and Western philosophical backgrounds. Chinese patients, therapists and trainees struggle with assumptions inherent in an analytic attitude steeped in Western ideas of individualism that are often at odds with a Chinese Confucian ethic of respect for the family and the work group. The situation is further complicated by the rapid evolution of Chinese culture itself, emerging from years of trauma, new economics, and the one child policy of the last generation that has introduced a new Chinese brand of individualism and new family structure that are not equivalent to those of the West. This volume breaks new ground in exploring these issues and challenges to the introduction of analytic therapies into China, from the viewpoint of Western teachers, and Chinese teachers, clinicians, anthropologists and observers.

~~lcolm Pines and Lise Rafaelsen The Seventh International Congress of Group Psychotherapy organized in Copenhagen by the International Association of Group Psychotherapy was one of the largest and most representative congresses on this subject that has yet been held. Probably for the first time we achieved the declared aim of the International Association: that of bringing together representatives of the different approaches to group psychotherapy in the same forum to allow for communication, exchange, and development of our relation ships. Previous congresses have been less representative and it seems to augur well for the future of the Association and of it's congresses that there was this strong force and wish for unification and for exchange within the field of group psychotherapy. The Congress theme, "The Individual and the Group: Boundaries and Interrelations in Theory and Practice" was chosen because it gave an opportunity once again to examine the very basis for group ~sycho therapy as theory and as practice. The basic theme, stated in the opening papers by Professor Marie Jahoda and Professor James Anthony, was replayed daily with new developments and variations according to the theoretical position of each subsequent speaker.

Advances in Group Therapy Trauma Treatment contains compelling theoretical, clinical, and research advances in group trauma therapy by leading experts in the field. This timely book includes short-term integrated and long-term psychodynamic group therapy models from several theoretical perspectives, with informative clinical illustrations in each chapter describing how to foster co-regulation of affect, treat disturbances in attachment, and address dissociation, shame, primitive defenses, and enactments associated with PTSD, complex PTSD, and sexual abuse. Interventions to address the harm and loss of safety following mass trauma that are often mirrored in large and small psychotherapy groups are described. Unique to this volume is the role of diversity, the necessary adaptations of group therapy models to different cultures, and the relationship of trauma to structural and systemic racism, hate, and bigotry. Finally, leadership considerations such as training, ethical guidelines, supervision, pre-group preparation, and self-care for group therapists will be enumerated. Integrating well-established group theory and techniques with new practice and research findings, this book is indispensable to mental health professionals who treat traumatized individuals.

The Colors Of Violence written by Sudhir Kakar and has been published by University of Chicago Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1996-05 with Psychology categories.

For decades India has been intermittently tormented by brutal outbursts of religious violence, thrusting thousands of ordinary Hindus and Muslims into bloody conflict. In this provocative work, psychoanalyst Sudhir Kakar exposes the psychological roots of Hindu-Muslim violence and examines with grace and intensity the subjective experience of religious hatred in his native land. With honesty, insight, and unsparing self-reflection, Kakar confronts the profoundly enigmatic relations that link individual egos to cultural moralities and religious violence. His innovative psychological approach offers a framework for understanding the kind of ethnic-religious conflict that has so vexed social scientists in India and throughout the world. Through riveting case studies, Kakar explores cultural stereotypes, religious antagonisms, ethnocentric histories, and episodic violence to trace the development of both Hindu and Muslim psyches. He argues that in early childhood the social identity of every Indian is grounded in traditional religious identifications and communalism. Together these bring about deep-set psychological anxieties and animosities toward the other. For Hindus and Muslims alike, violence becomes morally acceptable when communally and religiously sanctioned. As the changing pressures of modernization and secularism in a multicultural society grate at this entrenched communalism, and as each group vies for power, ethnic-religious conflicts ignite. The Colors of Violence speaks with eloquence and urgency to anyone concerned with the postmodern clash of religious and cultural identities.
