Social Networking and Impression Management: Self-Presentation in the Digital Age, edited by Carolyn Cunningham, offers critical inquiry into how identity is constructed, deconstructed, performed, and perceived on social networking sites (SNSs), such as Facebook, and LinkedIn. The presentation of identity is key to success or failure in the Information Age, especially because SNSs are becoming the dominant form of communication among Internet users. The architecture of SNSs provide opportunities to ask questions such as who am I; what matters to me; and, how do I want others to perceive me? Original research studies in this collection utilize both quantitative and qualitative methods to study a range of issues related to identity management on SNSs including authenticity, professional uses of SNSs, LGBTQ identities, and psychological and cultural impacts. Together, the contributors to this volume draw on current research in the field and offer new theoretical frameworks and research methods to further the conversation on impression management and SNSs, making this text essential for both students and scholars of social media.

I am aware that, once my pen intervenes, I can make whatever I like out of what I was.' Paul Valéry, Moi. Modernism is often characterized as a movement of impersonality; a rejection of auto/biography. But most of the major works of European modernism and postmodernism engage in very profound and central ways with questions about life-writing. Max Saunders explores the ways in which modern writers from the 1870s to the 1930s experimented with forms of life-writing - biography, autobiography, memoir, diary, journal - increasingly for the purposes of fiction. He identifies a wave of new hybrid forms from the late nineteenth century and uses the term 'autobiografiction' - discovered in a surprisingly early essay of 1906 - to provide a fresh perspective on turn-of-the-century literature, and to propose a radically new literary history of Modernism. Saunders offers a taxonomy of the extraordinary variety of experiments with life-writing, demonstrating how they arose in the nineteenth century as the pressures of secularization and psychological theory disturbed the categories of biography and autobiography, in works by authors such as Pater, Ruskin, Proust, 'Mark Rutherford', George Gissing, and A. C. Benson. He goes on to look at writers experimenting further with autobiografiction as Impressionism turns into Modernism, juxtaposing detailed and vivacious readings of key Modernist texts by Joyce, Stein, Pound, and Woolf, with explorations of the work of other authors - including H. G. Wells, Henry James, Joseph Conrad, Ford Madox Ford, and Wyndham Lewis - whose experiments with life-writing forms are no less striking. The book concludes with a consideration of the afterlife of these fascinating experiments in the postmodern literature of Nabokov, Lessing, and Byatt. Self Impression sheds light on a number of significant but under-theorized issues; the meanings of 'autobiographical', the generic implications of literary autobiography, and the intriguing relation between autobiography and fiction in the period.

Impression Management Theory and Social Psychological Research gathers together the various strands of thinking and research on impression management. This book does not easily lend itself to a singular organization. Not only do the authors deal with very different topics, they sometimes disagree with one another on assumptions and interpretations. Nevertheless, there are chapters that tend to group together. The book can be organized into six parts. Part I, General Theory, consists of chapters that deal primarily with issues related to the reasons for, and specific tactics of, impression management. Part II, Impression Management and Laboratory Research, includes two chapters that make a major contribution to the social psychology of the experiment. Part III, Attitudes as Tactics of Self-Presentation, centers around the concept of attitudes. The chapters in Part IV, Self-Presentation and Harm-Doing, are organized around the theme of harm-doing. Part V, Bargaining, Distributive Justice, and Impression Management, focuses on the distribution of rewards in groups. Part VI, Individual Differences and Impression Management, is concerned with individual differences such as mental illness, social anxiety, and shyness.

Abstract: An inward journey explores the personality examining habits, patterns, character traits, and strengths. Fear and self-doubt can sap energies. Procrastination paralyzes and makes one passive and pessimistic. Instead choose lofty thoughts that can carry the mind away from painful and obsessive worrying. To be without pain, fill the mind with painless ideas. Learn to smile, act well; walk tall; and face the world with confidence. Personal image is never finished or static; it is always evolving. Humans possess their own healing powers (physical and psychological) and can restore themselves by refraining from habits that interfere with health. (kbc).

After thirty-five years of psychiatric practice and working with thousands of patients, Dr. Westin has observed the widespread presence of poor self-esteem. He has observed and concluded that this is a very significant contributor to many problems in life. How we think, feel, and see ourselves determines how we behave and deal with what life puts in our paths. We were not born with the self-esteem we have now. We all learned "habits of thinking" in response to our environment and these have shaped the creation of our self-esteem. "Impressions of Self" provides a framework for building self-esteem. Dr. Westin has searched for a common root for lifes problems and inner paintried to identify a beginning point, or at least a major element of a problem that can make the most difference if changed. That one thing is self-esteemour impressions of self. We can feel better, enjoy life more, and experience more inner peace if we have solid, positive feelings about ourselves. "Impressions of Self" affirms that there is not only hope, but also the ability within each of us to develop and maintain a comfortable, invigorating, productive self-esteem that can help keep us on lifes road of unexpected twists and turns. You owe to yourself to create the person you want to be. Take a look at this little book--study all of it or the parts most pertinent to you; read and re-read it until the goal of new and better habits of thinking, feeling, and behaving begin to be a reality. This little book is for you.
