Current middleware solutions, e.g., application servers and Web services, are very complex software products that are hard to tame because of intricacies of distributed systems. Their functionalities have mostly been developed and managed with the help of administration tools and corresponding configuration files, recently in XML. Though this constitutes flexibility for developing and administrating a distributed application, the conceptual model underlying the different configurations is only implicit. To remedy such problems, Semantic Management of Middleware contributes an ontology-based approach to support the development and administration of middleware-based applications. The ontology is an explicit conceptual model with formal logic-based semantics. Its descriptions may therefore be queried, may foresight required actions, or may be checked to avoid inconsistent system configurations. This book builds a rigorous approach towards giving the declarative descriptions of components and services a well-defined meaning by specifying ontological foundations and by showing how such foundations may be realized in practical, up-and-running systems.

Databases have been designed to store large volumes of data and to provide efficient query interfaces. Semantic Web formats are geared towards capturing domain knowledge, interlinking annotations, and offering a high-level, machine-processable view of information. However, the gigantic amount of such useful information makes efficient management of it increasingly difficult, undermining the possibility of transforming it into useful knowledge. Service-oriented computing has recently gained extensive momentum in both industry and academia, and major software vendors hook on to the service paradigm and tailor their software systems towards services in order to accommodate ever-changing process and product requirements in today’s dynamic market environments. While dynamic binding of services at runtime was identified as a core functionality of service-based environments as far back as 2000, its industrial-strength implementation has yet to be achieved. The main reason for this is the lack of rich service specifications, concepts, and tools to process them. This book introduces advanced concepts in service provisioning and service engineering, including semantic concepts, dynamic discovery and composition, and illustrates them in a concrete business use case scenario. To prove the validity of the concepts and technologies, a semantic service provisioning reference architecture framework as well as a prototypical implementation of its subsystems and a prototypical realization of a proper business scenario are presented. Thus the book goes way beyond current service-based software technologies by providing a coherent and consistent set of technologies and systems functionality that realizes advanced concepts in service provisioning. Both the use case scenario and the provisioning platform have already been substantiated and implemented by the EU-funded Adaptive Services Grid project. E-government faces huge challenges in achieving interoperability and integration, taking into account differences in laws, regulations, services, administrative processes and languages across regions and countries. With the growth in Internet of Things, the realization of environments composed of diverse connected resources (devices, sensors, services, data, etc.) becomes a tangible reality. Together with the preponderant place that smartphones take in the daily life of users, these nascent smart spaces pave the way to the development of novel types of applications; carried by the phones of nomadic users and dynamically reconfiguring themselves to make use of such appropriate connected resources. Creating these applications however goes hand-in-hand with the design of tools supporting the nomadic users roaming in these spaces, in particular by enabling the efficient selection of resources. While such a selection calls for the design of theoretically grounded descriptions, it should also consider the profile and preferences of the users. Finally, the rise of (possibly mobile) connected resources calls for designing a scalable process underlying this selection. Progress in the field is however sluggish especially because of the ignorance of the stakeholders (and the interactions between them) composing this eco-system of “IoT-enabled smart environments”. Thus, the multiplicity of diverse connected resources entails interoperability and scalability problems. While the Semantic Web helped in solving the interoperability issue, it however emphasizes the scalability one. Thus, misreading of the ecosystem led to producing models partially covering connected resource characteristics.Revolving from our research works performed over the last 6 years, this dissertation identifies the interactions between the stakeholders of the nascent ecosystem to further propose formal representations. The dissertation further designs a framework providing search capabilities to support the selection of connected resources through a semantic analysis. In particular, the framework relies on a distributed architecture that we design in order to manage scalability issues. The framework is embodied in a VR Gateway further deployed in a set of interconnected smart places and that has been assessed by several experimentations.
