Students need opportunities for moral action if they are to develop and enhance their character. Service learning provides opportunities for students to put into practice the character traits they are learning in school. Providing service for others educates a child through the mind and the heart. Previous literature suggests that service learning is essential to developing empathy and responsibility. This study sought to measure students' character development and self-concept before and after completing a service project within the school setting. As the researcher and project coordinator, I facilitated the service learning experience and involved fourth grade students tutoring first grade students. The service learning process involved components of planning, reflection, and celebration.
