This book summarizes the “interim result” of the servitization activities in manufacturing industries. While the early literature on servitization tended to stress only its advantages, more recently, scholars have also started to refer to the challenges associated with servitization. This book attempts to give a balanced picture of servitization. The book is structured in four parts: Part I introduces the topic by presenting the most recent academic discussion about servitization and uses an empirical analysis to show the degree of servitization across Europe. The results of this analysis are then compared to the discussion in the literature. This comparison highlights the existing discrepancies between the rather euphoric literature and the more skeptical practical experience. The second and third parts attempt to explain these discrepancies by taking as a starting point the assumption that servitization recommendations have to consider the heterogeneity of the manufacturing sector and the capabilities of the provider. Part II presents articles which analyze the specific characteristics of different sectors with their barriers and potentials and presents frameworks for a successful servitization of the core sectors in European manufacturing industries which include, e.g. aeronautics, automotive, ICT, chemical industries, pulp and paper industries and different engineering sectors. Part III focuses on companies’ capabilities which are necessary for successful servitization. These include strategic management, marketing, organization, innovation, engineering, human resources, controlling, quality and networks. All the contributions in parts II and III add up to a detailed picture of servitization for sectors and functions and indicate the practical implications for enterprises in manufacturing industries. The fourth part concludes the book with a chapter summarizing the findings and giving an outlook of servitization in manufacturing industries, its challenges and future developments.

Manufacturing Servitization In The Asia Pacific written by Jing Wang and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-10-24 with Business & Economics categories.

This book systematically describes the development of manufacturing servitization in the Asia-Pacific region. It offers a practical and theoretical reference guide to the manufacturing companies in the Asia-Pacific region, which is now a major global manufacturing center. Servitization is a fairly recent trend in the manufacturing industry: some American and European manufacturing companies have successfully transformed to service oriented manufacturing companies over the past three decades, while Asian-Pacific region companies have only more recently begun to recognize the importance of servitization. But some Asia-Pacific region companies have been exploring approaches in the same direction of servitization without being aware of the concept. One unique aspect of this book is the fact that it takes into consideration the social and cultural influences of this region. It introduces companies within and beyond the region, as well as the academic world, to the current state of development of the Asia-pacific manufacturing industry and its servitization trend. This is the first book that focuses on this topic, one which is of great theoretical and practical importance.

Purpose: This paper focuses on developing further the recent conceptual frameworks of competitive dynamics and business-to-business value ecosystems considering the changing environment of Industry 4.0 and the particular perspective of servitization.Design/Methodology/Approach: This a conceptual paper that reviews and syntheses business model concepts in relation to competitive dynamics, collaborative business ecosystems and supply chain as evolving and reshaping manufacturing and services within Industry 4.0.Findings: The transformation of organizations in light of Industry 4.0 has led to a re-framing of business models and practices, such as stakeholder value and supply chain relationships cooperating within a highly dynamic environment. In an attempt to consider the implications that Industry 4.0 has, particularly from the service perspective, this work attempts to distill directions for future research. Originality/Value: Previous studies on Industry 4.0 have articulated the reasoning about the benefits of Industry 4.0, with its paradigm shift to cyber-physical systems and revised business models. The intention of this paper, is to be able to further define collaboration and value ecosystems in order to show the interdependence and integration between organisations as applied to servitization within Industry 4.0. Moreover, this paper seeks to begin to articulate how research can be conducted to determine the degree to which the change and paradigm shift has become a reality.

Servitization It Ization And Innovation Models written by Hitoshi Hirakawa and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-04-02 with Business & Economics categories.

This book looks at two-stage industrial cluster theory and new innovation models in view of IT-ization and servitization of products. The formation of industrial clusters such as export processing zones and special economic zones has been the preferred mechanism for developing countries to boost their industrial development and export performance for the last several decades. Existing literature related to Development Economics cited numerous benefits of industrial clusters and several countries have reaped such benefits. The book goes beyond formation of traditional industrial clusters. It promotes the idea of formation of two-stage clusters. The book further stresses on new innovation models. The ideas are promoted based on the empirical evidence of Chinese and Taiwanese firms in consumer electronics and automobile sectors. Finally, the book looks at firm strategies in new business environment which is dominated by servitization of industrial products. It argues for firms to integrate manufacturing and services to a great extent. To substantiate the arguments, empirical evidence comes from India, Taiwan, and Bangladesh. The study further finds evidence, perhaps for the first time that innovation and knowledge acquisition strategies are influenced not only by size of firms but also vary with market preferences.

To make the service integration a success story despite the many challenges, L J Oberle argues that management understanding is necessary to address the key success factors in the individual strategic approaches. These approaches concern either the core business or an explore business unit and vary in their integration degree. Thus, knowing which strategy is pursued allows to determine the most relevant success factors, which is the first step towards successful servitization and post-merger integration. Only if these factors are identified and addressed correctly, M&A is a promising approach to servitization for industrial companies, as L J Oberle’s findings from the analysis or 8 case studies and a total of 24 interviews prove. The Author: Laura Johanna Oberle currently does a doctorate on business process management in service operations and servitization at the Chair of Service Operations Management at the University of Mannheim in cooperation with a German consultancy specialized in post-merger integration projects.

The Factory Free Economy written by Lionel Fontagné and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-03-01 with Business & Economics categories.

De-industrialization, accelerated by the financial crisis, is a long term process. The comparative advantage of emerging economies shifted towards more advanced goods and their growing populations commanded an increasing share in global demand. This shift towards a factory-free economy in high income countries has drawn the attention of policy makers in North America and Europe. Some politicians have articulated alarming views, initiating mercantilist or 'beggar-thy-neighbour' cost-competitiveness policies. Yet companies that concentrate research and design innovations at home but no longer have any factories there may be the norm in the future. This volume proposes an economic analysis of this phenomenon and includes 11 contributions which complement each other and tackle the problem from different angles. The evidence in this book suggests that de-industrialization is a process that happens over time in all countries, even China. One implication is that criticism of China is not likely to provide a solution to these long term trends. Another implication is that the distinction between manufacturing and services is likely to become increasingly blurry. More manufacturing firms are engaging in services activities, and more wholesale firms are engaging in manufacturing. One optimistic perspective suggests that industrial country firms may be able to exploit the high-value added and skill-intensive activities associated with design and innovation, as well as distribution, which are all components of the global value chain for manufacturing. Although this ongoing transformation of the industrial economies may be consistent with evolving comparative advantage, it has significant short-run costs and requires far-sighted investments. These include the costs to workers who are caught in the shift from an industrial to a service economy, and the need to invest in new infrastructure and education to prepare coming generations for their changing roles.
