Sex determination, differentiation and gamete maturation are well organised molecular events in vertebrates. In vertebrates, sex determination and differentiation are two important events in the development of gonads (testis or ovary). Sex determination is the genetic (sex chromosomes) or environmental process by which the sex (male or female) of an individual is established. During embryonic development, primordial germ cells migrate from the site of origin to the gonadal primordia where they differentiate along with somatic cells and finally form the indifferent/bipotential gonads. Depending on the action of various factors the bipotential gonads give rise to either testis or ovaries. In most vertebrates, excluding fishes and some amphibians, the event of sex determination is controlled genetically and later the progression of gonadal development is controlled by hormones and other factors. Interestingly, these processes in fishes are controlled not only genetically but also through hormones or environmental factors. These characteristics make fish the champions of sex reversal and serve as excellent animal models to precisely understand sexual development. The next interesting aspect is meiotic maturation which is essentially mediated by gonadotropins and progesterone metabolites to trigger final gamete maturation in fishes which is different from mammals. The novel aspects pertaining to gamete maturation has been studied in great detail in fish which depicts precise regulatory events of gamete maturation.

The unprecedented level of diversity recorded among the clones of self-fertilizing gynogenetic unisexuals and self-fertilizing simultaneous hermaphrodites challenges current ideas on the predominant role of recombination in promoting evolution of biological diversity. Though limited to a few species, the existence of self-fertilizing and cyclical sex changing hermaphrodites remians a puzzle to many geneticists and endocrinologists. Within a few days after the removal of a harem master or mistress, a successor changes sex and takes over the harem; the causes for the sex changing mechanism pose many challenges to socio-ecologists and behaviour specialists. This book is a synthesis of relevant and recent information on sexuality of fishes and points towards new directions of desired research.

Of all vertebrates, fish exhibit unparalleled diversity of sexual plasticity and flexibility, ranging from gonochorism to unisexualism, and exceptional patterns of functional hermaphroditism. Fish farming and monosex aquaculture have led to reproductive dysfunction with males producing less milt, and females failing to ovulate and spawn. This book brings together relevant information on the role of the endocrine system on sexual differentiation in fish, and bridges the gap between molecular endocrinologists and fishery scientists.

The second edition of the manual on ultrasound diagnostics of the sturgeon reproductive system contains several significant additions based both on the appearance of new equipment for ultrasound diagnostics and on the results of recent studies of the authors. The new edition describes in detail the features of various types of ultrasonic sensors, including previously not used for sturgeon diagnostics. At the request of readers of the first edition, the features of the analysis of echograms obtained using a convex sensor are considered. The section describing the diagnosis of pathologies of the reproductive system of fish, including hermaphroditism, has been substantially expanded. The guide provides basic principles of ultrasound diagnostic and recommendations for the sturgeon ultrasound diagnostic equipment and workplace arrangements. There is a detailed description of ultrasound diagnostic procedure for identification of sex and maturity stage of sturgeon gonads. There is also a detailed instruction on ultrasound images analysis and description of specific diagnostic features. Annual sexual cycles with various inter-spawn intervals were for the first time analysed specifying the duration of each maturity stage in heat-reserve units. The principles of controlling linear and generative growth of sturgeons contained in replacement and breeding stocks of sturgeon farms had been defined. The Atlas contains more than a hundred illustrations, provided with detailed descriptions and notes which allow even a novice fish farmer to independently learn ultrasound diagnostic of sex and maturity stage of sturgeon gonads. The book is addressed to specialists and chief managers of sturgeon farms, the farmers involved in sturgeon breeding, scientists and students.

This book addresses the growing needs in deciphering the biological processes associated with fish reproduction, in view of the growth of aquaculture and the dwindling natural stocks of commercially important fish. It presents a comprehensive overview on egg production in fish, from the standpoint of the oocyte. With this view in mind, the book includes chapters on oocyte development (oogenesis), hormonal regulation and hormone receptors, formation of the egg envelopes, growth, accumulation of nutrients and maternal transcripts, maturation, hydration, ovulation and fertilization. A special emphasis is placed on using state-of-the-art tools including electron microscopy for discerning the ultra-structure of the follicle and genomic/proteomic tools to fully understand biological basis of fish reproduction. Studies on promoting oocyte maturation, ovulation and spawning in farmed fish and preservation of fish oocytes at low temperatures are also included. The book will appeal to University lecturers, students, research scientists and those associated with culture of fish in freshwater or marine aquaculture.
