The unprecedented level of diversity recorded among the clones of self-fertilizing gynogenetic unisexuals and self-fertilizing simultaneous hermaphrodites challenges current ideas on the predominant role of recombination in promoting evolution of biological diversity. Though limited to a few species, the existence of self-fertilizing and cyclical sex changing hermaphrodites remians a puzzle to many geneticists and endocrinologists. Within a few days after the removal of a harem master or mistress, a successor changes sex and takes over the harem; the causes for the sex changing mechanism pose many challenges to socio-ecologists and behaviour specialists. This book is a synthesis of relevant and recent information on sexuality of fishes and points towards new directions of desired research.

Marine fishes represent astonishing diversity with respect to practically every aspect of their biology. Reproductive modes and sexual patterns are especially fascinating and provide deep insight into general evolutionary problems. In this volume, chapters focus on reproduction and sexuality among groups of fishes defined by habitat, taxon, and the reproductive processes that are critical for reproductive success. The book illustrates how knowledge of reproductive biology among marine fishes can help identify vulnerable and potentially vulnerable species in the face of changing environmental conditions and increasing human-based pressures.

This book is the first to report that research in allogenics/xenogenics has conclusively shown that fishes have retained bisexual potency even after sexual maturity and spermiation. The XY genotype found in the unexpected female phenotypes sired by supermales (Y1Y2) and androgenic males (Y2Y2) points out the need to employ sex specific molecular ma

Sexual development in fish is characterized by extraordinary variation, including genetic and environmental sex determination, male and female heterogamety, single gene and polygenic systems, protandry, protogyny and simultaneous hermaphroditism, social influence on sexual determination, and many combinations and variations between and within these systems. In recent years, major breakthroughs have been made in studying sexual development in fish, attracting the attention of researchers in other fields such as developmental biology, genetics, evolution, ecology, conservation and aquaculture. This special issue brings together some of the recent hot topics in this field and provides an overview of the broad range of scientific aspects that benefit from knowledge on sexual development in fish. It presents ten reviews by international experts who explore the genetic basis of sex determination, gonadal differentiation, environmental effects on sexual development, evolutionary views and application in fisheries and aquaculture. An excellent source of up-to-date information, this publication is highly recommended to researchers and students interested in the evolution of sex determination, fish genetics and breeding.

Sex determination, differentiation and gamete maturation are well organised molecular events in vertebrates. In vertebrates, sex determination and differentiation are two important events in the development of gonads (testis or ovary). Sex determination is the genetic (sex chromosomes) or environmental process by which the sex (male or female) of an individual is established. During embryonic development, primordial germ cells migrate from the site of origin to the gonadal primordia where they differentiate along with somatic cells and finally form the indifferent/bipotential gonads. Depending on the action of various factors the bipotential gonads give rise to either testis or ovaries. In most vertebrates, excluding fishes and some amphibians, the event of sex determination is controlled genetically and later the progression of gonadal development is controlled by hormones and other factors. Interestingly, these processes in fishes are controlled not only genetically but also through hormones or environmental factors. These characteristics make fish the champions of sex reversal and serve as excellent animal models to precisely understand sexual development. The next interesting aspect is meiotic maturation which is essentially mediated by gonadotropins and progesterone metabolites to trigger final gamete maturation in fishes which is different from mammals. The novel aspects pertaining to gamete maturation has been studied in great detail in fish which depicts precise regulatory events of gamete maturation.

Of all vertebrates, fish exhibit unparalleled diversity of sexual plasticity and flexibility, ranging from gonochorism to unisexualism, and exceptional patterns of functional hermaphroditism. Fish farming and monosex aquaculture have led to reproductive dysfunction with males producing less milt, and females failing to ovulate and spawn. This book

A comprehensive study of sex differentiation gonochoric and hermaphroditic fishes, this book examines sex chromosomes and sex determining genes, emphasizing the need to search for more than one sex-determining gene residing on different chromosomes. It traces the origin of hermaphrodites from secondary gonochores and explains the conservation of ho

"Understanding reproduction in marine fishes is critical to their conservation. It is also a fascinating topic in its own right. This book is now the best single reference on the subject, with original insights, analysis, and information. Anyone interested in the fascinating diversity of ways fish reproduce will want to have a copy of this book handy."--Peter Moyle, co-author of Protecting Life on Earth "Cole has assembled the internationally recognized authorities and they successfully cover topics of critical interest to behaviorists, ecologists, anatomists, physiologists, and conservation biologists. These experts demonstrate the amazing diversity and complexity of sexual and reproductive characteristics that have evolved among marine fishes."--Gene Helfman, co-author of The Diversity of Fishes: Biology, Evolution and Ecology "Kathleen Cole and her contributing authors raise from the depths of ignorance many neglected themes in the reproductive biology and fluid sexuality of marine fishes. The sheer richness of the data and the enthusiastic, engaging and thoughtful ways in which they are presented will encourage further research and discovery in biology of marine fishes and their complex and dynamic habitats."--Lynne Parenti, co-author of Comparative Biogeography

Reproductive Biology Of Teleost Fishes written by Robert J. Wootton and has been published by John Wiley & Sons this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-12-03 with Technology & Engineering categories.

Reproductive Biology of Teleost Fishes is the first integrated review of the reproductive biology of the bony fishes, which are the most species-rich and diversified group of vertebrates. Teleosts display remarkable variation in their modes of reproduction, and this volume is intended to provide a framework for understanding the remarkable reproductive diversity of this group. It describes their reproductive biology using, wherever possible, phylogenetic analyses and life-history theory as a means to interpret the information. The book addresses the genetic, physiological, behavioural, ecological, evolutionary and applied aspects of teleost reproduction in a comparative framework that emphasises the adaptive basis of reproductive diversity. Reproductive Biology of Teleost Fishes provides a comprehensive synthesis of fish reproduction that will be of great interest to life scientists, particularly ecologists, evolutionary biologists, physiologists and advanced undergraduates, postgraduates and research workers requiring a comprehensive overview of fish reproduction. The book is suitable for courses in fish biology and ecology, reproductive physiology and reproductive genetics. It also addresses applied questions and will be of value for courses on fisheries science and aquaculture. Libraries in all universities and research establishments where biological sciences, fisheries science and aquaculture are studied and taught should have several copies of this important book on their shelves.
