As LGBTQ movements in Western Europe and North America are becoming increasingly successful at awarding LGBTQ people rights, especially institutional recognition for same-sex couples and their families, what becomes of the deeper social transformation that these movements initially aimed to achieve? The United States is in many ways a paradigmatic model for LGBTQ movements in other countries. This book focuses on the transformations of the United States' LGBTQ movement since the 1980s, highlighting the relationship between its institutionalization and the disappearance of sexuality from its most visible claims, so that its growing visibility and legitimation since the 1990s have not led to an increase in militancy. The book examines the issue from the bottom up, identifying the links between the varying importance of sexuality as a movement theme and actors' mobilization, and enhances the import of subjectivity in militancy. It draws attention to cultural, sometimes infrapolitical, forms of militancy that perpetuate the role of sexuality in LGBTQ militancy.

"Known around the world as a bastion of machismo and Catholicism, Latin America in recent decades has emerged as the undisputed gay rights leader of the Global South. More surprising yet, nations such as Argentina have surpassed more "developed" nations like the United States and many European states in extending civil rights to the homosexual population. Setting aside the role of external factors and conditions in pushing gay rights from the Developed North to the Global South -- such as the internationalization of human rights norms and practices, the globalization of gay identities, and the diffusion of policies such as "gay marriage" -- Out in the Periphery aims to "decenter" gay rights politics in Latin America by putting the domestic context front and center. The intention is not to show how the "local" has triumphed the "global" in Latin America. Rather the book suggests how the domestic context has interacted with the outside world to make Latin America an unusually receptive environment for the development of gay rights. During his lifetime and the four centuries following his death, King Edward II (1307-1327) acquired a reputation for having engaged in sexual and romantic relationships with his male favourites, and having been murdered by penetration with a red-hot spit. This book provides the first account of how this reputation developed, providing new insights into the processes and priorities that shaped narratives of sexual transgression in medieval and early modern England. In doing so, it analyses the changing vocabulary of sexual transgression in English, Latin and French; the conditions that created space for sympathetic depictions of same-sex love; and the use of medieval history in early modern political polemic. It also focuses, in particular, on the cultural impact of Christopher Marlowe's Edward II (c.1591-92). Through such close readings of poetry and drama, alongside chronicle accounts and political pamphlets, it demonstrates that Edward's medieval and early modern afterlife was significantly shaped by the influence of literary texts and techniques. A 'literary transformation' of historiographical methodology is, it argues, an apposite response to the factors that shaped medieval and early modern narratives of the past.

Den Theaterbegriff versehen wir im Titel des Bandes mit dem Gender-Sternchen, um einerseits die Offenheit des Begriffs für unterschiedliche, teils widersprüchliche Vorstellungen von Theater zu unterstreichen und um andererseits die genuine Verbindung von Theater mit queerer Kultur und Theorie zu betonen. Dieser Band möchte einen ersten Überblick über ein bisher wenig beschriebenes Feld geben. Die Beiträge dokumentieren die vielfältigen theatralen Auseinandersetzungen mit Sexualität und Geschlecht in den westdeutschen Emanzipationsbewegungen, die wesentlich zur Herausbildung der freien Theaterszene beitrugen und somit wichtige ästhetische und politische Referenzpunkte für zeitgenössische Theater-, Tanz- und Performancepraxis darstellen. Sie zeigen aber auch die Auseinandersetzungen mit Geschlecht und Sexualität im künstlerischen und gesellschaftlichen Underground der DDR. Und schließlich blicken sie auf Travestie- und Cabaret-Kultur, um die Bedeutung von Theater für trans*-Personen dieser Zeit zu verdeutlichen.
