Exploring space: Spatial notions in cultural, literary and language studies falls into two volumes and is the result of the 18th PASE (Polish Association for the Study of English) Conference organized by the English Department of Opole University and held at Kamień Śląski in April 2009. Heterogeneous objects provides various essays that explore the encounter of photography with other media since the 1960s. The essays offer new ways of thinking about photography beyond modernist notions of medium specificity and autonomy based upon the idea that a photograph does not rely on a coherent system of codes but is almost always encountered as a fragmented, partial object. Addressing recent debates in art history and photography theory, film studies, and media theory, the contributions cover a broad array of approaches, relating photography to issues of the panorama, surveillance, sculpture, transformation and processuality, and the development of new media categories. This book argues for a durational cinema that is distinct from slow cinema, and outlines the history of its three main waves: the New York avant-garde of the 1960s, the European art cinema in the years after 1968, and the international cinema of gallery spaces as well as film festivals since the 1990s. Figures studied include Andy Warhol, Ken Jacobs, Chantal Akerman, Marguerite Duras, Claude Lanzmann, James Benning, Kevin Jerome Everson, Lav Diaz, and Wang Bing.Durational cinema is predominantly minimal, but has from the beginning also included a more encompassing or encyclopedic kind of filmmaking. Durational cinema is characteristically representational, and converges on certain topics (the Holocaust, deindustrialization, the experience of the working class and other marginalized people), but has no one meaning, signifying differently at different moments and in different hands. Warhol’s durational cinema of subtraction is quite different from Jacobs’s durational cinema of social disgust, while Lav Diaz’ durational sublime is quite different from Kevin Jerome Everson’s unblinking studies of African-American working people.

Dispositive konstituieren apparative Gefüge, wie diejenigen des Kinos, und auch die mit ihnen verbundenen Wahrnehmungsmodelle. Dabei geben sie seismographisch Aufschluss über sichtbare mediale Umbrüche sowie verdeckte Ordnungen von Macht und Gesellschaft. Im Wechselspiel von Projektion, Installation und Ausstellung lassen Displays und Dispositive transmediale und transkulturelle Verflechtungen sichtbar werden. Ausgangs- und Referenzpunkt der Beiträge bilden sowohl kinematographische Installationen der Gegenwartskunst und Filmdispositive in ihrer spezifischen Ästhetik, für die das Zusammenspiel von Display und Dispositiv konstitutiv ist. In Betracht kommen ebenso die Höhle als primordiales kinematographisches Dispositiv wie Hotelarchitekturen, Projektionsräume und Displays der Versammlung, mobile Endgeräte und die Stadt als Dispositiv.
