Excerpt from Shakespeare's Tragic Justice Introduction [9]nature, to the pride Of Coriolanus, the anger of Lear, and even to Antony's infatuation or Macbeth's ambi tion. The heart of Aristotle's doctrine Of katharsis, in truth, does not lie in this manner Of hamartia, whether in Hamlet or in much Of his own material in Greek tragedy, in Sophocles' Philoctetes or Antigone, for ex ample, both plays barely touched upon by Aristotle. Poetic justice in its usual sense will not serve to purge our emotions, nor to reconcile us to catastrophe. Yet some satisfaction Of our sense of justice is necessary if the tragic emotions are not to be heightened and to remain unresolved in a final disharmony. The problem of justice seems to have haunted Shakespeare as it haunted Renaissance Christendom. In this book, first published in 1963, four aspects of the problems of justice in action in Shakespeare’s great tragedies are explored. This study is based on the lifetime’s research of Elizabethan habits of mind by one of the most distinguished Shakespearean scholars, and will be of interest to students of English Literature, Drama and Performance.

Excerpt from Shakespearean Tragedy and the Elizabethan CompromiseIn making this study of Shakespearean tragedy I am un dertaking to enlarge a great creative synthesis of Shake spearean scholarship, Theodore Spencer's Shakespeare and the Nature of Man, and to supplement a great work of Shakespearean criticism, A. C. Bradley's Shakespearean Tragedy. Profiting from the scholarship on Elizabethan psy chology, social theory, and cosmology of Ruth Anderson, Lily B. Campbell, and James Emerson Phillips, Jr., among others, and from his own research, Spencer re-created a setting against which Shakespearean drama casts off new lights. Today, thanks to him and to E. M. W. Tillyard, whose Elizabethan World Picture appeared shortly after Spencer's book, we are so cognizant of the importance of the Elizabethan concept of hierarchy in human nature, society, and the universe that we can scarcely comprehend how it was almost entirely passed by before. But Spencer only partly fulfilled his purpose of presenting the bistori cal - the intellectual, social, and emotional - background which Shakespeare was able to use, and out of which he grew, 1 for, interested primarily in intellectual history and literary criticism, he confined his comments on Shakespeare's social background to a few perfunctory sentences. I have sought not only to fill in further details in the Elizabethan pattern of belief which he displayed but to show the social causes for the development of this pattern and for the age's intense awareness of the possibilities and consequences of its violation.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Shakespeare's Tragedy of Hamlet Several other allusions occur during the early years of the seventeenth century, evidently to the older Hamlet, Bokker'e Settromtix, 16os, My Name's Hamlet revenge West ward Hoe, 1607 (let these husbands play mad Hamlet and cry revenge; Rowland's Tie Night Rm, 1618 i will not cry Hamlet Revenge, etc). There is a comic passage in tile Looking Glass for London and England, written by Lodge Greene, probably before 1589, which strikes me as a burlesque reminiscence of the original of Hamlet, Act 1. Sc. Ii. 184-240; Adam, the smith's man, exclaims thus to the Clown Alas, sir, your father, - why, sir, methinlts i see the gentle man still: a proper youth he was, faith, aged some forty and ten; his beard rat's colour, half black, half white; his nose was in the highest degree of noses, etc. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Shakespeare's Tragedy of Macbeth: Edited, With Notes I have likewise omitted most of the Critical Com ments from the introduction and elsewhere, as the books from which they were taken are now generally accessible in public and school libraries. For these extracts I have substituted comments of my own, in the course of which I have attempted to settle some ques tions that have been much discussed, but, to my think ing, never satisfactorily answered. I have endeavoured to Show how Shakespeare himself answers them, instead of reading into the play what is not there, as some excellent critics seem to me to have done. Excerpt from The Shakespearian Drama: A Commentary Not without deep insight does Ulrici say that Shakespeare's Comedies are based upon divine Love, while the Tragedies reveal divine Justice. Still we must not forget that in Comedy, too there is Justice, the foolish or guilty man has his folly or guilt served up to him in strict measure. Despite their diversity in tone and subject matter, Shakespeare's four mature tragedies--Hamlet, Othello, King Lear, and Macbeth--all have an essential experience in common. Bernard McElroy defines this experience as the collapse of the subjective world of the tragic hero. Originally published in 1973. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press.
