Seminar paper from the year 2001 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 2.3 (B), University of Tubingen (New Philology Faculty), course: Hauptseminar: Restoration Literature, language: English, abstract: Milton is one of the greatest poets of the English language. His career as a poet was marked by private tragedies and public controversies. Samson Agonistes is a piece of work, which was composed by Milton not as a pure didactic exercise but also as extended personal meditation. It seems to be one of his attempts to justify the ways of God to himself and thereby establish a vision of Christian heroism that answers the fears and misgivings of his own heart and mind. Samson Agonistes also shows Milton′s struggle with politics after the defeat of the Good Old Cause in which he supported strongly. The events and emotions surrounding his composition Samson Agonistes had a great influence on this work. Nobody knows exactly when Samson Agonistes was written but it is assumed that it was in a time where his own resurrection and salvation had begun and that he had taken Samson as a role model less numinous than Christ to express his inner feelings. Samson Agonistes is therefor more interesting as a religious, political and autobiographical play than as the classical, Greek tragedy or as the Christian comedy, as so many people have judged it. In this term paper I will work out how much politics and religion have influenced Samson Agonistes and whether there are bibliographical correspondences between Milton and Samson. [...]

The life of Samson serves as both a testimony and template of secrecy and inner oppression within the hearts of many men. Unlike many Bible stories, the story of Samson speaks volumes to the concealed conflict that most men endure and are held hostage by. I believe that Samson's inner struggle was very real and is relevant to men today. Society tends to "play down" issues by simply ruling habitual male struggles as, "Just a passing phase, everyone makes mistakes," or "a man will be a man." However, chronic conflicts that afflict the souls of men cannot be overlooked or ignored. Society concludes that men are weak if they pursue clinical counseling, gain faith in God, or acquire help in their time of emotional need. Therefore, men tend to medicate themselves through alcohol abuse, drugs, sex, pornography, working excessive hours at the office, and using many other techniques to take away the pain and shame of the Samson within. The hard cold truth is: there is a Samson in all of us.

An Ideological Death written by Rachel S. Harris and has been published by Northwestern University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-08-15 with Literary Criticism categories.

An Ideological Death: Suicide in Israeli Literature examines literary challenges to Israel’s national narratives. The centrality of the army, the mythology of the "new Jew," the vision of the first Israeli city, Tel Aviv, and the very process by which a nation’s history is constructed are confronted in fiction by many prominent Israeli writers. Using the image of suicide, A. B. Yehoshua, Amos Oz, Etgar Keret, Yehudit Katzir, Alon Hilu, Yaakov Shabtai, Benjamin Tammuz, and Yehoshua Kenaz each engage in a critical and rhetorical process that examines the nation’s formation and reconsiders myths at the heart of the Zionist project. In Israeli literature, suicide represents a society’s compulsion to create impossible ideals that leave its populace disappointed and deluded. Yet, as Rachel S. Harris shows, even at their harshest these writers also represent the idealism that helped build Israel as a modern nation-state.

The veteran contributors to this volume take as their central drama, and their essential task for analysis, the enduring literary and political legacy of Israel Prize laureate Amos Oz (1939–2019). Born a decade prior to the establishment of the state of Israel, in what was then Palestine under British rule, Oz's life spanned the country's entire history, and both his fiction and nonfiction restlessly probe and illuminate its fraught conflicts, contradictions, and ambivalences. Throughout his career, Oz grappled frankly with the often-painful realities of Israeli life while also celebrating the ebullience of the Israeli spirit, and his sophisticated understanding of the sociopolitical turmoil of his society was always accompanied by intensely lyrical language and deep penetrations into the vulnerabilities of the human psyche. The volume's twenty contributors bring an exciting diversity of concerns and perspectives to Oz's most celebrated novels (including his powerfully resonant final novel, Judas) as well as to overlooked facets of his oeuvre, illuminating the breathtaking scope of his literary legacy. Together, they offer gripping analyses of his urgent and profoundly universal works about political and romantic dreamers whose heartfelt struggles with both their own human frailties and those of the state ultimately resonate far beyond Israel itself.

Many Christians grew up learning about Samson through Bible studies and sermons, yet confusion remains. Traditional narratives reflect Samson has a flawed hero or a failed judge, yet many interpretations provide more confusion than clarity. Samson X file: Identity, Faith, Struggle, and Divine Purpose introduces a pivotal shift in understanding this biblical character, focusing on Samson's life primarily from the standpoint of his lifelong Nazirite vow. Samson X-File goes beyond the simplicity of success and failure, instead exploring the profound implications of Samson’s dual calling by God—as both a Nazirite and a judge. It poses a critical question: "Why did God choose Samson to embody these seemingly paradoxical roles?" The story of Samson is my story and your story. Samson X-File will challenge readers how to live as a Christian in today’s generation. Samson X-File will help readers gain a sense of calling as His chosen children and our purpose in life.
