A recent study explored whether community policing (CP) could work in different types of neighborhoods. The analysis found it successful in some communities, but not in others. Of the 15 participating Chicago police beats, the researchers rated 9 excellent & 6 struggling. The research question itself garners even more interest for it suggests that CP should have similar benefits in different types of neighborhoods. The authors present a theoretical framework to help police decide what type of CP strategy could work best in specific neighborhoods. Through the Situational Policing Model, the authors present a clear & observable desired end state for officers as they work to respond to neighborhood crime & disorder. Illustrations.

Situational crime prevention and problem-oriented policing (POP)have made rapid progress during the past two decades. But these two related approaches have in the past neglected implementation, the stage when prevention measures are put into practice. The contributing authors to this volume are all researchers with a long-standing interest in crime prevention, who have also been directly involved in implementing situational or problem-oriented projects. Their chapters provide both practical guidance and general principles concerning how to get the most out of crime prevention projects. Chapter topics include: lessons derived from POP projects; the role of project management in community safety initiatives; conflicts and tensions in implementing crime reduction measures; a case study of POP implementation without self-interest; how central agencies should support local programs; mistaking tactics for strategy in crime reduction initiatives; lessons from England on success and failure; mindsets, set minds and implementation; and, guidance and good practice in crime prevention.

Policing In An Age Of Reform written by James J. Nolan and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-12-07 with Social Science categories.

This book tackles the contentious issue of policing in an age of controversy and uncertainty. It is a timely book written by police scholars — predominantly former practitioners from Europe, Australia and North America — who draw from their own research and operational experiences to illuminate key issues relating to police reform in the present day. While acknowledging some relevance of usual proposed models, such as problem-solving, evidence-based policing and procedural justice, the contributors provide an insider look at a variety of perspectives and approaches to police reform which have emerged in recent decades. It invites university students, criminologists, social scientists, police managers, forensic scientists to question and adapt their perspectives on a broad range of topics such as community policing, hate crime, Islamic radicalisation, neighborhood dynamics, situational policing, antidiscrimination and civil society, police ethics, performance measures, and advances in forensic science, technology, intelligence and more in an accessible and comprehensive manner.

Situational Prevention Of Organised Crimes written by Ronald V. Clarke and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-01-11 with Social Science categories.

Situational crime prevention is the art and science of reducing opportunities for crime. Despite accumulating evidence of its value in reducing many different kinds of crime - such as burglary, fraud, robbery, car theft, child sexual abuse and even terrorism - little has previously been published about its role in reducing organised crimes. This collection of case studies, by a distinguished international group of researchers, fills this gap by documenting the application of a situational prevention approach to a variety of organised crimes. These include sex trafficking, cigarette and drug smuggling, timber theft, mortgage fraud, corruption of private professionals and public officials, and subversion of tendering procedures for construction projects. By moving the focus away from the nature of criminal organisations to the analysis of the crimes committed by these organisations, the book opens up a fresh agenda for policy and research. Situational Prevention of Organised Crimes will be of interest to those tasked with tackling organised crime problems, as well as those interested in understanding the ways that organised crime problems have manifested themselves globally, and how law enforcement and other agencies might seek to tackle them in the future.

There is good evidence that the police can control crime hot spots without simply displacing crime problems to other places. Police officers should strive to use problem-oriented policing and situational crime prevention techniques to address the place dynamics, situations, and characteristics.
