Excerpt from Sketches of the Life, Character and Times of Paul Jones Most of the modern scribblers in biography seem to describe their subjects as differing in many respects from the great mass of mankind, and so materially different, that to imitate their virtues, or seek to compare with them in any important respect, would be downright pre sumption in the rising generation; and if, through envy, hate or malice, they are endeavoring to damn one to ever lasting fame, they represent him with so many bad quali ties and so few or no good ones, that the reader is not warned of his own danger to become equally wicked, feel ing that it would be impossible. Excerpt from The Life and Adventures of Rear-Admiral John Paul Jones: Commonly Called Paul Jones I commenced writing the Life of Paul Jones with the impression, received from early reading, that he was a reckless adventurer, incapable of fear, and whose chief merit consisted in performing deeds of desperate daring. But I rise from the careful examination of what he has written, said, and done, with the conviction that I had misjudged his character. I now regard him as one of the purest and most enlightened of patriots, and one of the noblest of men. His name should be enrolled upon the same scroll with those of his intimate friends, Washington, Jefferson, Franklin, and Lafayette. As this exhibition of the character of Admiral Jones is somewhat different from that which has been presented in current literature, I have felt the necessity of sustaining the narrative by the most unquestionable documentary evidence. Excerpt from Some Facts About John Paul Jones Thanks to the generous and untiring zeal Of our late ambas sador to France, the grave of John Paul Jones has recently been discovered in Paris, and his remains have been removed by the governrrient to this country for interment at Annapolis. This discovery has revived the interest which our people have always taken in the career of this illustrious captain Of the seas, and has of late provoked much discussion in the maga zines and newspapers Of the various incidents in his life, and, in particular, of the reason for his change of name. The reason for this change of name has ever been a puzzle to his biographers. Most Of them pass it by with the mere state ment that he changed his name for unknown reasons. Some few attempt to account for it upon theories, which, while they may be plausible, yet do not appeal to the intelli gent reader. Of these there are three, which perhaps seem most plausible, and which, one or another, are generally accepted as true by most people. I will proceed to give these, and the reasons which occur to me for rejecting them as nu sound an-d without anything but conjecture to support them. Excerpt from Life and Character of the Chevalier John Paul Jones, a Captain in the Navy of the United States, During Their Revolutionary War, Dedicated to the Officers of the American Navy IT is in the revolutions of empires that truly great men make themselves known. ln the tranquil scenes of peace the human intellect, with little excitement, and without a grand object, is inert, exhausted in common pursuits, or wastes itself in placid contemplation, or in the pleasures of life. When powerful sentiments animate the heart, and en lightened views direct us to the attainment of benefits calcu lated to secure the freedom, happiness, and prosperity of the human race, the soul expands, the mental faculties assume their natural proportion and energy, and, in defiance of the artificial distinctions of society, genius, and talents, however originally obscure, burst from concealment, shine with re splendent lustre, and manifest themselves in actions which command the esteem and admiration of the world. The history of all nations, ancient as well as modern, attest the truth of this assertion; and France in articular, within the last thirty-five years, furnishes proof in abundance, that whatever distinctions are created y systems of social order, in behalf of birth and fortune, nature distributes her favours without regard to wealth or rank. Grayson County is famous in southwestern Virginia as the cradle of the New River settlements--perhaps the first settlements beyond the Alleghanies. The Nuckolls book is equally famous for its genealogies of the pioneer settlers of the county, which, typically, provide the names of the progenitors of the Grayson County line and their dates and places of migration and settlement, and then, in fluid progression, the names of all offspring in the direct and sometimes collateral lines of descent. Altogether somewhere in the neighborhood of 4,000 persons are named in the genealogies and indexed for ready reference.
