Excerpt from Slavery in South Carolina and the Ex-Slaves, or the Port Royal Mission Surely, there is aline of right somewhere; surely, there are principles of right necessarily eternal, sin'ce God is; surely, these principles cannot change; surely, circum stances, cannot reach or affect them; surely, there must be laws enforcing those principles; surely, as the prin ples are eternal, the laws cannot change; surely, they must have the strength of the Administration, as apledge of their execution; surely, they must respect all beings alike, must apply to the minutest action. Surely, then, every action must be with, or against those laws, must com pel their eternal approval, or penalty, every action calling upon the laws of eternal justice for the well done, or the penalty. Surely that award, must be as eternal, as the sin, and those laws. Surely a Mediator makes no escape from them. He is not the minister of sin. He only makes obedi ence possible to us. He establishes, the law, dies! That we be forgiven, cleared of its past records, cleansed, and com pelled to break it no more, through the power that death provides. All this adds awful weight, and dignity, to that law, renders disobedience an eternal insult, not only to the law, 'but to that Mediator, that tenderest grace, that costliest sacrifice. SO that disobedience is an insult, not only to the law, which cannot forgive, over look, Or fail in penalty, but to that grace, that death, that Offering Of soul for sin. Surely, then, God, his law, his sacrifice, cannot be slighted, without full penalty. Surely that penalty must be exacted alike Of each rational being. Man must be left free to break that law, else no free obedience could he render, from his not being free, or able to disobey. Evidently, when he knows that there is grace provided for him, and Offered freely, and availabl he is alone responsible for having that grace. The astonishing growth of Christianity in the global South over the course of the twentieth century has sparked an equally rapid growth in studies of ''World Christianity,'' which have dismantled the notion that Christianity is a Western religion. What, then, are we to make of the waves of Western missionaries who have, for centuries, been evangelizing in the global South? Were they merely, as many have argued, agents of imperialism out to impose Western values? In An Unpredictable Gospel, Jay Case examines the efforts of American evangelical missionaries in light of this new scholarship. He argues that if they were agents of imperialism, they were poor ones. Western missionaries had a dismal record of converting non-Westerners to Christianity. The ministries that were most successful were those that empowered the local population and adapted to local cultures. In fact, influence often flowed the other way, with missionaries serving as conduits for ideas that shaped American evangelicalism. Case traces these currents and sheds new light on the relationship between Western and non-Western Christianities.

Throughout the history of the United States, work-based social welfare practices have served to affirm the moral value of work. In the late nineteenth century this representational project came to be mediated by the printed word with the emergence of industrial print technologies, the expansion of literacy, and the rise of professionalization. In Work Requirements Todd Carmody asks how work, even the most debasing or unproductive labor, came to be seen as inherently meaningful during this era. He explores how the print culture of social welfare—produced by public administrators, by economic planners, by social scientists, and in literature and the arts—tasked people on the social and economic margins, specifically racial minorities, incarcerated people, and people with disabilities, with shoring up the fundamental dignity of work as such. He also outlines how disability itself became a tool of social discipline, defined by bureaucratized institutions as the inability to work. By interrogating the representational effort necessary to make work seem inherently meaningful, Carmody ultimately reveals a forgotten history of competing efforts to think social belonging beyond or even without work.

The biographical essays in this volume provide new insights into the various ways that South Carolina women asserted themselves in their state and illuminate the tension between tradition and change that defined the South from the Civil War through the Progressive Era. As old rules—including gender conventions that severely constrained southern women—were dramatically bent if not broken, these women carved out new roles for themselves and others. The volume begins with a profile of Laura Towne and Ellen Murray, who founded the Penn School on St. Helena Island for former slaves. Subsequent essays look at such women as the five Rollin sisters, members of a prominent black family who became passionate advocates for women’s rights during Reconstruction; writer Josephine Pinckney, who helped preserve African American spirituals and explored conflicts between the New and Old South in her essays and novels; and Dr. Matilda Evans, the first African American woman licensed to practice medicine in the state. Intractable racial attitudes often caused women to follow separate but parallel paths, as with Louisa B. Poppenheim and Marion B. Wilkinson. Poppenheim, who was white, and Wilkinson, who was black, were both driving forces in the women’s club movement. Both saw clubs as a way not only to help women and children but also to showcase these positive changes to the wider nation. Yet the two women worked separately, as did the white and black state federations of women’s clubs. Often mixing deference with daring, these women helped shape their society through such avenues as education, religion, politics, community organizing, history, the arts, science, and medicine. Women in the mid- and late twentieth century would build on their accomplishments.
