Physical appearance in today's society is considered to be very important. Western society's "ideal" body type is often depicted as muscular for men and thin for women. This study analyzed four types of magazines: Men's Health, Men's Fitness, Women's Health and Women's Fitness. Forty magazine covers (10 issus from 2014-2015) and 318 cover lines were analyzed to examine the messages prevalent in the cover lines. Results found that men's health and fitness cover lines focused on work-out topics, body image, gaining muscle and nutrition. For women, results found that cover lines focused on body image, work-out topics, weight, nutrition and beauty/grooming. Cover line types (e.g. labels, statements, and questions) were also analyzed in terms of attracting consumer attention. The findings in this study suggest that cover line were most prominent because they provide specific information to the reader on how to achieve health and fitness. In addition, the poses of the cover models were examined in order to address if there were differences in portrayal of fitness. The theoretical framework, Social Comparison Theory (Festinger, 1954), was supported in that men and women were displayed in stereotypical ways -- muscularity for men and thinness for women.
