The Definitive Guide to Governing Shared Services and SOA Projects SOA Governance: Governing Shared Services On-Premise and in the Cloud is the result of a multi-year project to collect proven industry practices for establishing IT governance controls specific to the adoption of SOA and service-orientation. Authored by world-renowned experts in the fields of SOA, IT governance, and cloud computing, this comprehensive book provides clear direction as to what does and does not constitute SOA governance and then steps the reader through the most important industry governance practices, as they pertain to individual SOA project lifecycle stages. With a consistent, vendor-neutral focus, and with the help of case study examples, the authors demonstrate how to define and position precepts, organizational roles, processes, standards, and metrics. Readers benefit from thorough and visually depicted cross-references and mapping between roles, processes, precepts, and project stages, enabling them to fully explore dynamics and dependencies and thereby learn how to use these governance controls to create their own custom SOA governance systems. This important title will be valuable to every practitioner concerned with making SOA work, including senior IT managers, project managers, architects, analysts, developers, administrators, QA professionals, security specialists, and cloud computing professionals. Seminar paper from the year 2005 in the subject Computer Science - Commercial Information Technology, grade: 1,0, European Business School - International University Schlo Reichartshausen Oestrich-Winkel (Institute of Research on Information Systems), language: English, abstract: Service-oriented architecture (SOA), often enthusiastically emphasized as the future IT infrastructure, is currently a big topic in the IT community. In their seminar thesis, the authors provide an introduction into the technology and management possibilities of SOA. Based on an analysis of literature, the authors analyze the strength, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats for SOA as an IS architecture, including the advantages and disadvantages from both technological and management view. Using this analysis, a framework is proposed that shows that various determinants need to be considered when planning the adoption of SOA in a corporate context. The study shows that beyond capital requirements, also strategic, process, and cultural determinants play a significant role. Considering these, the authors derive a set of four generic adoption strategies for SOA in practice, highlighting exemplary scenarios in which companies should implement SOA themselves or with the help of external providers. While the study highlights the need for further scientific analysis of SOA adoption, managers and executives of IT can use it's results to assess whether SOA fits their current situation or not. The generic adoption strategies will provide further support in designing an appropriate approach to SOA for businesses.

**Service-Oriented Architectures: A Practical Guide for the Enterprise** provides a comprehensive overview of SOA, from its basic principles to its most advanced concepts. The book is written in a clear and concise style, and it is packed with examples and case studies. SOA is a software design paradigm that promotes the development of loosely coupled, interoperable services. SOA has become increasingly popular in recent years as enterprises seek to become more agile and responsive to changing business needs. SOA is based on the principle of service orientation, which states that software applications should be designed as a collection of independent, reusable services. These services can be combined in various ways to create new applications or extend existing ones. SOA provides a number of benefits over traditional software design approaches, including: * Increased agility: SOA applications can be more easily modified and extended than traditional applications. This is because SOA services are loosely coupled, which means that they can be changed without affecting other parts of the application. * Improved interoperability: SOA services are designed to be interoperable, which means that they can be used by different applications and platforms. This makes it easier to integrate SOA applications with legacy systems and third-party applications. * Reduced costs: SOA can help to reduce software development costs by promoting the reuse of services. This is because SOA services can be used in multiple applications, which eliminates the need to develop duplicate code. **Service-Oriented Architectures: A Practical Guide for the Enterprise** is a valuable resource for anyone who wants to learn more about SOA. The book provides a comprehensive overview of SOA, from its basic principles to its most advanced concepts. The book is written in a clear and concise style, and it is packed with examples and case studies. This book is intended for readers who have some experience with software development. The book assumes that readers have a basic understanding of object-oriented programming and software design. **Service-Oriented Architectures: A Practical Guide for the Enterprise** is a valuable resource for anyone who wants to learn more about SOA. Soa Design Patterns written by Thomas Erl and has been published by Pearson Education this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-12-31 with Computers categories.

In cooperation with experts and practitioners throughout the SOA community, best-selling author Thomas Erl brings together the de facto catalog of design patterns for SOA and service-orientation. More than three years in development and subjected to numerous industry reviews, the 85 patterns in this full-color book provide the most successful and proven design techniques to overcoming the most common and critical problems to achieving modern-day SOA. Through numerous examples, individually documented pattern profiles, and over 400 color illustrations, this book provides in-depth coverage of: • Patterns for the design, implementation, and governance of service inventories–collections of services representing individual service portfolios that can be independently modeled, designed, and evolved. • Patterns specific to service-level architecture which pertain to a wide range of design areas, including contract design, security, legacy encapsulation, reliability, scalability, and a variety of implementation and governance issues. • Service composition patterns that address the many aspects associated with combining services into aggregate distributed solutions, including topics such as runtime messaging and message design, inter-service security controls, and transformation. • Compound patterns (such as Enterprise Service Bus and Orchestration) and recommended pattern application sequences that establish foundational processes. The book begins by establishing SOA types that are referenced throughout the patterns and then form the basis of a final chapter that discusses the architectural impact of service-oriented computing in general. These chapters bookend the pattern catalog to provide a clear link between SOA design patterns, the strategic goals of service-oriented computing, different SOA types, and the service-orientation design paradigm. In this book, semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs) are studied with a view to linear and nonlinear applications in next-generation optical networks. Quantum-dot SOAs can be optimized for linear amplification of signals with different modulation formats and multiplexing techniques. Conversely, bulk SOAs can be easily optimized for operation in the nonlinear regime. However, due to the fast carrier recovery times in QD SOAs we also look into nonlinear applications with these devices.
