Social competence is indicative of both social functioning and academic success (Buhs & Ladd, 2001; Roman, Babchishin, Pagani, & Kohn, 2010). Training in children's social development and social competence is not universally required in teacher preparation programs. However, pre-service teachers would benefit from understanding social competence skills and factors that facilitate its development in children. For the current project, a handbook was created based on research in social competence to address this issue. The handbook was developed by consulting the research in social competence. It defined key social competencies such as peer acceptance and rejection, friendship skills, physical and relational aggression, and emotion regulation. Resources were identified that can assist teachers in implementing social competence curriculum in their classrooms. The author interviewed professors who teach in the credential program and solicited feedback on the handbooks to further develop the material. A powerpoint was created to accompany the handbook and offer evidence-based examples of ways to develop social competence in early elementary-aged children. The handbook and powerpoint were then presented in two sections of Child Development students enrolled in a course on social and emotional development. These students as well as the instructor provided evaluative feedback to further develop this project. It is recommended that this handbook be used within teacher credentialing programs to share the importance and implications of social competence.

The alarming statistic that 40% to 50% of new teachers leave the profession within five years makes pre-service training of teachers even more crucial to get right. Failing to address the mental health needs and holistic wellbeing of teachers and not providing them with the tools necessary to break the cycle of likely burnout cascade is incredulously negligent, and threatens to make educating our children unsustainable in the future. In this project, through a content analysis approach, I will draw upon a wide range of scholarly research literature to form both the guiding principles and core components of a course to promote and develop social and emotional competencies (SEC) and Emotional Intelligence (EI) in pre-service teachers. Social and Emotional Learning has gradually become a central theme in education all over the world. There is growing literature that tackles the social and emotional learning of learners across grade levels and beyond, in addition to the surrounding factors such as the role families and after-school programs play, yet there is a predominant focus on the role schools and universities play in the lives of learners. However, there is a dire need for examining the social and emotional learning of teachers in general and of pre-service teachers in particular. Not just the social and emotional learning competencies that enable them to transfer those skills to learners, but rather pre-service teachers' personal social and emotional learning, as you cannot pour from an empty cup. To this end, this study aims to explore the perceptions of a student teacher, a cooperating teacher, and a university supervisor with regard to social and emotional learning, and how the relationships among the three participants mediate the development the student teacher's social and emotional learning. First, I establish what social and emotional learning means and situate it in the literature. Then, I delineate the study design and analysis process. After that, I present the data findings, and finally, I discuss the contributions of the study to the field and prospects of future research.
