In today's climate of accountability and high-stakes testing, many U.S. schools are choosing to focus on the three Rs to the exclusion of other subjects, including social studies. Yet it is more crucial than ever for schools to foster the qualities that will enable students to actively participate in a democratic and global society. The Essentials of Social Studies, Grades K-8 takes a look at how innovative educators are helping students to hone these skills. Readers of this book will learn more about *The challenges that elementary and middle school teachers face in keeping social studies in the curriculum. * How to align social studies lessons with curriculum standards. * Strategies to infuse social studies instruction with passion and purpose. * Ways to promote students' deep understanding of social studies content. * Why lessons and assessments should give students opportunities to solve problems, work on projects, and engage in simulations. * How social studies can prepare students for a lifetime of active civic involvement. * Professional development that will help teachers bring the social studies curriculum to life in the classroom. The future of the United States in no small part depends on how well social studies teachers prepare students to assume their responsibilities as citizens. The Essentials of Social Studies, Grades K-8 will help teachers rise to this considerable challenge.

A project is described which identifies essential social studies skills and presents information to high school classroom teachers on how to inculcate skills in students. Four major categories of skills are discussed--locating information, evaluating information, using time and place concepts, and analyzing social problems. Specific project goals were to define essential social studies skills for senior high students, create a test item bank which could be used to create skills tests for diagnosis and post-instructional analysis, and to create skill lesson models which could be used for student remediation and/or enrichment. The document is presented in five major chapters. In chapter one, the project rationale and goals are presented. In chapter two, information is offered on the essential skills. Chapter three focuses on the essential learner outcomes in social studies process objectives which were developed by the Minnesota Department of Education. Chapter four presents a test item bank which includes test questions relating to each of the essential skill categories. Chapter five, the bulk of the document, presents 125 lessons relating to the skill areas. For each lesson, information is presented on objectives, background information, directions, and special instructions on activities such as using the dictionary, using the telephone book, reading and interpreting charts, and finding percentages. Students are involved in a variety of activities, including determining bias in selections from social studies textbooks, discussing issues in class, using primary sources, using chronology and time lines, drawing inferences from maps, identifying value statements, and identifying consequences of actions. The Patchwork Of World History In Texas High Schools written by Stephen Jackson and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-11-30 with Education categories.

This book traces the historical development of the World History course as it has been taught in high school classrooms in Texas, a populous and nationally influential state, over the last hundred years. Arguing that the course is a result of a patchwork of competing groups and ideas that have intersected over the past century, with each new framework patched over but never completely erased or replaced, the author crucially examines themes of imperialism, Eurocentrism, and nationalism in both textbooks and the curriculum more broadly. The first part of the book presents an overview of the World History course supported by numerical analysis of textbook content and public documents, while the second focuses on the depiction of non-Western peoples, and persistent narratives of Eurocentrism and nationalism. It ultimately offers that a more global, accurate, and balanced curriculum is possible, despite the tension between the ideas of professional world historians, who often de-center the nation-state in their quest for a truly global approach to the subject, and the historical core rationale of state-sponsored education in the United States: to produce loyal citizens. Offering a new, conceptual understanding of how colonial themes in World History curriculum have been dealt with in the past and are now engaged with in contemporary times, it provides essential context for scholars and educators with interests in the history of education, curriculum studies, and the teaching of World History in the United States.
