Field tests were performed to study the horizontal load-displacement characteristics of natural soil deposits and to associate these characteristics with the behavior of laterally loaded piles. The ultimate objective of the tests was to acquire information essential for the design of laterally loaded soil-supported structures. Three soil conditions were considered: (1) bay mud with a desiccated crust in its natural dry state, (2) bay mud submerged within the area of testing, and (3) a hydraulic fill of granular material classified as SP by the unified soil classification system. Segmental pile tests were performed with three sizes of laterally loaded segments and at various depths below ground surface in the bay mud. (Similar tests in the hydraulic fill were covered in a previous NCEL report.) Lateral load tests on full-scale piles from 4 to 16 inches in diameter were performed at each test site. Theoretical information, available soil data, and results of the segmental pile tests were compared and combined to establish representative lateral load-displacement relationships for the soil at any depth at the three sites by using rectangular hyperbolas. Theoretical predictions of the response of laterally loaded piles were made using these relationships, and the results were compared with data obtained during the lateral load tests on piles. Experimental data and theoretical predictions compared favorably. (Author).

The most up-to-date method for the design of laterally loaded piles is to solve numerically the differential equation describing pile behavior. Iterative solutions are necessary since there is a nonlinear relationship between soil resistance and pile deflection. Curves giving soil resistance as a function of pile deflection, called p-y curves, have been the subject of research for a number of years. The development of p-y curves normally requires that a test be performed on an instrumented laterally loaded pile. A curve showing bending moment in the pile needs to be obtained for each of the applied loads. This curve can be differentiated twice to obtain soil resistance, and it can be integrated twice to obtain pile deflection. Cross plots of these values can be made at desired depths to obtain the p-y curves. This paper shows that nondimensional curves, developed from the numerical solutions of the differential equation, can be used to estimate p-y curves if only the following easily obtainable information is reported; pile properties, magnitude of the individual lateral loads, point of load application, deflection of the top of the pile, slope of the top of the pile, and condition of restraint (if any) at the top of the pile. Thus, there needs to be no instrumentation of the pile except above ground. The procedure is illustrated by applying it to a test reported in the literature.

The complexities of designing piles for lateral loads are manifold as there are many forces that are critical to the design of big structures such as bridges, offshore and waterfront structures and retaining walls. The loads on structures should be supported either horizontally or laterally or in both directions and most structures have in common t

The laterally-loaded pile has long been a topic of research interest. Several models of the soil surrounding a pile have been developed for simulation of lateral pile behavior, ranging from simple spring and dashpot models to sophisticated three-dimensional finite-element models. However, results from the available pile-soil models are not accurate due to inherent approximations or constraints. For the springs and dashpots representation, the real and imaginary stiffness are calculated by idealizing the soil domain as a series of plane-strain slices leading to unrealistic pile behavior at low frequencies while the three-dimensional finite-element analysis is very computationally demanding. Therefore, this dissertation research seeks to contribute toward procedures that are computationally cost-effective while accuracy of the computed response is maintained identical or close to that of the three-dimensional finite-element solution. Based on the fact that purely-elastic soil displacement variations in azimuthal direction are known, the surrounding soil can be formulated in terms of an equivalent one-dimensional model leading to a significant reduction of computational cost. The pile with conventional soil-slice model will be explored first. Next, models with shear stresses between soil slices, including and neglecting the soil vertical displacement, are investigated. Excellent agreement of results from the proposed models with three-dimensional finite-element solutions can be achieved with only small additional computational cost.

This report focuses on the development of a new method of analysis of laterally loaded piles embedded in a multi-layered soil deposit treated as a three-dimensional continuum. Assuming that soil behaves as a linear elastic material, the governing differential equations for the deflection of laterally loaded piles were obtained using energy principles and calculus of variations. The differential equations were solved using both the method of initial parameters and numerical techniques. Soil resistance, pile deflection, slope of the deflected pile, bending moment and shear force can be easily obtained at any depth along the entire pile length. The results of the analysis were in very good agreement with three-dimensional finite element analysis results. The analysis was further extended to account for soil nonlinearity. A few simple constitutive relationships that allow for modulus degradation with increasing strain were incorporated into the analysis. The interaction of piles in groups was also studied.
