I have simply had recourse to memoirs, campaign journals, and correspondence; and as often as possible to original documents. For the diplomatic part I owe much to the voluminous work of Henri Doniol: Histoire de la Participation de la France à l' Etablissement de l' Indépendance des Etats-Unis.
