Excerpt from Soldiers and Sailors of France in the American War for Independence: 1776 1783 From January 6th to May 13th, 1916, in about fifty American cities where I was welcomed by the Alliance Française aux Etats-Unis et au Canada, from New York to San Francisco, from Chicago to New Orleans, I felt the hcart-bcat of a great nation. At that time the republic of Washington had already begun to recognize the fact that our cause was the same as its cause; its work peaceful, ours hard and bloody: namely, to fill the world with more compassion, justice, and dignity. I have seen this country restless, tormented with the thought of its present happy condition, while France and her allies were suffering heroically. From sympathetic admiration among the most generous, who are usually the most far-seeing, there were growing signs of impatience, and a strong desire to come over and suffer with us. This is a book of truth and friendship; needless to say, it lays no claim to erudition. I have simply had recourse to memoirs, campaign journals, and correspondence; and as often as possible to original documents. For the diplomatic part I owe much to the voluminous work of Henri Doniol: Histoire de la Participation de la France à l' Etablissement de l' Indépendance des Etats-Unis. In a book of noble inspiration, With Americans of Past and Present Days, by M. Jusserand, I have found some hitherto unedited data; I have found some also in the vivid descriptions of the Viscount de Noailles: Marins et Soldats Français en Amérique. Americans today have a love/hate relationship with France, but in How the French Saved America Tom Shachtman shows that without France, there might not be a United States of America. To the rebelling colonies, French assistance made the difference between looming defeat and eventual triumph. Even before the Declaration of Independence was issued, King Louis XVI and French foreign minister Vergennes were aiding the rebels. After the Declaration, that assistance broadened to include wages for our troops; guns, cannon, and ammunition; engineering expertise that enabled victories and prevented defeats; diplomatic recognition; safe havens for privateers; battlefield leadership by veteran officers; and the army and fleet that made possible the Franco-American victory at Yorktown. Nearly ten percent of those who fought and died for the American cause were French. Those who fought and survived, in addition to the well-known Lafayette and Rochambeau, include François de Fleury, who won a Congressional Medal for valor, Louis Duportail, who founded the Army Corps of Engineers, and Admiral de Grasse, whose sea victory sealed the fate of Yorktown. This illuminating narrative history vividly captures the outsize characters of our European brothers, their battlefield and diplomatic bonds and clashes with Americans, and the monumental role they played in America’s fight for independence and democracy.

Napoleon As Gaoler written by Edward Fraser and has been published by Pickle Partners Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-08-15 with History categories.

The lot of a prisoner of war is well documented in more recent conflicts such as the Second World War, Korea, Vietnam and the Gulf conflicts, however the British prisoners of war during the Napoleonic period have received scant attention as whole. Edward Fraser, a noted author on the period set out to redress this balance in the literature of the period, offering a view of the trials, mistreatment and hardships of the British POWS During Napoleon’s campaigns, along with canon, and standards innumerable, he captured the soldiers of the opposing powers in vast numbers, according to best estimates around half a million men fell into his hands. Of this number only a small fraction were in fact British, some twelve to sixteen thousand, this for two main reasons; that Britain never put into the field the numbers of the conscript armies such as Austria, Prussia and Russia, secondly they were never involved in such disastrous campaigns on the scale of Austerlitz, Jena, or the initial campaigns in Spain. Of the prisoners that were captured, either as crews mainly via shipwreck or during the 1809 Coruña campaign, their lot was hard enough, but was much better than the lot that befall the prisoners of Napoleon’s continental enemies. However the tales of the British prisoners recall shootings, extortion, maltreatment and arbitrary punishments and are a powerful counterweight to the proposition of the supreme enlightenment of the French system. From the high rank of general Lord Blayney, captured in an abortive sortie on Fuengirola to the lowly Midshipman Edward Boyes, the British prisoner tell tales of their incarceration and abuse at the hands of various French authorities. In fairness the treatment of the more than one hundred thousand French prisoners in English hands was not a great deal better, as they were imprisoned on floating hulks. An excellent addition to the collection of Fraser’s books on the Napoleonic Wars. Illustrations – 12

Excerpt from Rhode Island in the Colonial Wars: A List of Rhode Island Soldiers Sailors, in the Old French Indian War, 1755-1762 The conflict of French and English interests in the Ohio Valley served as the prelude, and Washington's defeat of Jumonville near Fort Du Quesne on May 27th 1754 as the spark, which ignited the fourth French war in which Rhode Island participated. This struggle called by European historians "The Seven Years War" is better known in America as "The Old French and Indian War." Military preparations were made in both England and France as well as in the Colonies. On January 1st 1755 the Rhode Island General Assemble voted to raise a company of 100 men for the emergency. As is usual, the length and intensity of the impending struggle was underestimated. In February the number was increased to 113, apparently to allow for officers, some of whom were appointed. A committee of War of five men was established to manage the military affairs of the Colony. In March 1755, before the 100 men had been enlisted, it was voted to raise four companies of 100 men each to take part in the secret expedition against Crown Point. The acts calling for 113 men were repealed and the officers transferred to the new companies. Christopher Harris was appointed Colonel of this expeditionary regiment. Meanwhile Braddock had landed in Virginia and taken command of the English forces in America. He planned to strike the French at three points. The southern army, under his personal command, was to attack Fort Du Quesne, and the northern army was to assemble at Albany, whence one detachment under Governor Shirley was to attack Niagara, while the other, under Colonel (later Sir) William Johnson, was to move against Crown Point. The Rhode Island regiment under Col. Harris marched to Green-Bush near Albany, where their boats were caulked and their guns cleaned and mended.
