Papers in this collection partly represent the set of talks that were presented at Texas Tech University on the occasion of Daya’s memorial workshop in the year 2007. Daya had a varied interest in the field of Dynamics and Control Theory and the papers bring out the essence of his involvement in these activities. He also had a large number of collaborators and this collection represent a good fraction of them. The papers included here cover his interest in control theory. Also included are papers from application areas that we believe are of strong interest to him.

Discrete Subgroups Of Semisimple Lie Groups written by Gregori A. Margulis and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1991-02-15 with Mathematics categories.

Discrete subgroups have played a central role throughout the development of numerous mathematical disciplines. Discontinuous group actions and the study of fundamental regions are of utmost importance to modern geometry. Flows and dynamical systems on homogeneous spaces have found a wide range of applications, and of course number theory without discrete groups is unthinkable. This book, written by a master of the subject, is primarily devoted to discrete subgroups of finite covolume in semi-simple Lie groups. Since the notion of "Lie group" is sufficiently general, the author not only proves results in the classical geometry setting, but also obtains theorems of an algebraic nature, e.g. classification results on abstract homomorphisms of semi-simple algebraic groups over global fields. The treatise of course contains a presentation of the author's fundamental rigidity and arithmeticity theorems. The work in this monograph requires the language and basic results from fields such as algebraic groups, ergodic theory, the theory of unitary representatons, and the theory of amenable groups. The author develops the necessary material from these subjects; so that, while the book is of obvious importance for researchers working in related areas, it is essentially self-contained and therefore is also of great interest for advanced students.

Thisbookisintendedasanintroductiontoallthe?nitesimplegroups.During themonumentalstruggletoclassifythe?nitesimplegroups(andindeedsince), a huge amount of information about these groups has been accumulated. Conveyingthisinformationtothenextgenerationofstudentsandresearchers, not to mention those who might wish to apply this knowledge, has become a major challenge. With the publication of the two volumes by Aschbacher and Smith [12, 13] in 2004 we can reasonably regard the proof of the Classi?cation Theorem for Finite Simple Groups (usually abbreviated CFSG) as complete. Thus it is timely to attempt an overview of all the (non-abelian) ?nite simple groups in one volume. For expository purposes it is convenient to divide them into four basic types, namely the alternating, classical, exceptional and sporadic groups. The study of alternating groups soon develops into the theory of per- tation groups, which is well served by the classic text of Wielandt [170]and more modern treatments such as the comprehensive introduction by Dixon and Mortimer [53] and more specialised texts such as that of Cameron [19].

With the classification of the finite simple groups complete, much work has gone into the study of maximal subgroups of almost simple groups. In this volume the authors investigate the maximal subgroups of the finite classical groups and present research into these groups as well as proving many new results. In particular, the authors develop a unified treatment of the theory of the 'geometric subgroups' of the classical groups, introduced by Aschbacher, and they answer the questions of maximality and conjugacy and obtain the precise shapes of these groups. Both authors are experts in the field and the book will be of considerable value not only to group theorists, but also to combinatorialists and geometers interested in these techniques and results. Graduate students will find it a very readable introduction to the topic and it will bring them to the very forefront of research in group theory.

Property (T) is a rigidity property for topological groups, first formulated by D. Kazhdan in the mid 1960's with the aim of demonstrating that a large class of lattices are finitely generated. Later developments have shown that Property (T) plays an important role in an amazingly large variety of subjects, including discrete subgroups of Lie groups, ergodic theory, random walks, operator algebras, combinatorics, and theoretical computer science. This monograph offers a comprehensive introduction to the theory. It describes the two most important points of view on Property (T): the first uses a unitary group representation approach, and the second a fixed point property for affine isometric actions. Via these the authors discuss a range of important examples and applications to several domains of mathematics. A detailed appendix provides a systematic exposition of parts of the theory of group representations that are used to formulate and develop Property (T).

Provides an outline and modern overview of the classification of the finite simple groups. It primarily covers the 'even case', where the main groups arising are Lie-type (matrix) groups over a field of characteristic 2. The book thus completes a project begun by Daniel Gorenstein's 1983 book, which outlined the classification of groups of 'noncharacteristic 2 type'.
